Sea, culture, and maritime traditions around the Scalambri Lighthouse in Punta Secca
Faro in Festa is the event that officially inaugurates the summer season in Punta Secca, the famous seaside hamlet of the municipality of Santa Croce Camerina, in the province of Ragusa. Established in 2024, the festival has quickly become a highly anticipated appointment, capable of attracting thousands of visitors and transforming the small village overlooking the sea into an open-air stage for culture, tradition, and conviviality.
The beating heart of the event is the historic Scalambri Lighthouse, built in 1857 by the will of Ferdinand II of Bourbon. During the festival, the lighthouse is exceptionally opened to the public for free guided tours, conducted by specialized personnel from the Navy's Lighthouse Service with the support of the MARIFARI command in Messina. It is a rare opportunity to climb up to the lantern, discover the history of maritime signaling, and admire the Iblean coast from above: an identity heritage that the community of Punta Secca holds dear.
The common thread of the festival is the connection to the sea, expressed in many forms. The «Living the Sea» section offers educational workshops on nutrition, demonstrations of traditional bread-making, and meetings dedicated to artisanal fishing and the promotion of forgotten fish species. There is also space for the outdoor art competition «Homage to Punta Secca», which brings together dozens of artists invited to portray the most evocative corners of the village, with an exhibition of the works and a final awards ceremony.
Promoted by the Municipality of Santa Croce Camerina together with the Glocal Association and with the support of MARIFARI Messina, Faro in Festa involves local associations, from the Pro Loco to the Avis and the Civil Protection. The event aims to enhance the historical and maritime heritage of Punta Secca, weaving together cultural promotion and tourism in one of the most beloved locations on the Ragusa coast, also made famous as the setting for the home of Inspector Montalbano.
From May 30 to June 2, 2026, Punta Secca hosted the third edition of Faro in Festa, welcomed by about 4,000 visitors over the four days. The Scalambri Lighthouse was opened to the public with free guided tours curated by the staff of the Lighthouse Service and the MARIFARI command of Messina.
The program intertwined the «Living the Sea» workshops dedicated to nutrition and traditional fishing, evening musical performances with local bands (including «Notte italiana» and «Fab Frequency»), the «Homage to Punta Secca» outdoor art competition, and the Baby Village in Piazza Concordia. The final day, June 2, celebrated Republic Day with a RAI television report dedicated to the event.
