Floral carpets and an arts festival in a village in the Sienese Valdichiana
Every year, on the occasion of Corpus Domini, the village of Farnetellaโa small hamlet in the municipality of Sinalunga, in the province of Sienaโwakes up at dawn to bring one of its most beloved traditions to life: the Farnetella Flower Festival. The narrow streets of the village are blanketed with petals, leaves, and wildflowers, forming intricate carpets and floral tableaux that wind for hundreds of meters through the historic center.
The custom of creating floral carpets originated in Rome in the 18th century and subsequently spread to many parts of Italy. In Farnetella, this practice has been handed down for over two centuries and holds a very special meaning: in a village with few inhabitants, the festival is a true testament to their love for their home. Preparation begins months in advance, with the study of designs and the gathering of flowers from the surrounding fields. Among the most commonly used species are broom (ginestra), dock, roses, poppies, and cornflowers.
From the first light of dawn until 11:00 am, the alleys are filled with volunteers busy creating their portion of the carpet in front of their homes. At 11:00 am, Holy Mass is celebrated in the Church of San Giovanni Battista, followed by the solemn Corpus Domini Procession, accompanied by the "Pietro Mascagni" Philharmonic of Farnetella, which winds through the flower-lined streets. This is the highlight of the festival, where the ephemeral art of the carpets merges with the religious and community spirit.
In recent years, the festival has been enriched with a full afternoon and evening arts festival, providing a platform for innovative and independent artists within the setting of the Sienese countryside. Book presentations with authors and actors, concerts, stand-up comedy shows, and DJ sets enliven the Piazzetta del Circolo Ricreativo "Il Forno", while food stalls and convivial moments round out the day. Literature, music, art, and gastronomy intertwine in a program that has breathed new life into a small community in inland Tuscany.
All events of the festival, sponsored by the Municipality of Sinalunga, the Province of Siena, and the Tuscany Region, are free of charge. It is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Sienese Valdichiana, far from the major tourist flows, and to experience a village festival where tradition and contemporary culture coexist in perfect harmony.
The 2026 edition of the Farnetella Flower Festival took place over two dates, starting with a spin-off on Sunday, May 31, and culminating on the day of Corpus Domini, Sunday, June 7. As per tradition, volunteers began composing floral carpets along the village streets at dawn, in anticipation of the Holy Mass and the solemn 11:00 am procession. The afternoon featured a rich, widespread festival with literary presentations, live music, and comedy, all with free admission.
