The ritual of the devotional bonfires on March 19th in Rignano Garganico
In the small village of Rignano Garganico, perched on the Gargano promontory in the province of Foggia, the feast of Saint Joseph on March 19th has been celebrated for centuries with the Fanoje, the characteristic devotional bonfires that light up the streets and squares of the historic center. It is the secular and now traditional event dedicated to the patron saint of the Church and fathers, a rite that every year draws the entire community together around the warmth of the fire.
The Fanoje have their roots in an ancient layering of religious and pagan symbolism. In the peasant world, the fire of March 19th marked the end of winter hardships and the opening toward the season of abundance: burning dry wood meant regeneration, the passage from winter to spring. This memory has merged with the Christian devotion to Saint Joseph, and even today, many faithful entrust their prayers for a prosperous and protected season to the blessed fire.
The preparation of the Fanoje begins weeks in advance, with the collection of wood by volunteers, young people, and local associations: a choral effort that is already an integral part of the festival. On the evening of March 19th, the celebration comes alive with Holy Mass in the Mother Church of Maria Santissima Assunta, followed by a procession through the streets of the village and the lighting of the bonfires. The last Fanoja is traditionally lit at the hunters' section, where the community gathers for a convivial moment around the embers.
The Fanoje are not just about fire and devotion: around the flames, folk songs, dialect music, traditional Gargano dishes, and excellent local wine intertwine. It is an occasion for meeting that strengthens the identity and social bonds of Rignano Garganico, passing on a living and participatory intangible heritage from generation to generation.
The event is promoted and coordinated by the Maria Santissima Assunta Parish, the Municipality of Rignano Garganico, the Pro Loco, and the local Civil Protection, with the contribution of numerous volunteers. It is among the traditional events highlighted by the Gargano National Park Authority, which promotes the identity festivals of the villages on the promontory in Puglia.
The historic Fanoje of Saint Joseph returned to Rignano Garganico on Thursday, March 19th, 2026. Due to bad weather, the organizers adjusted the schedule without giving up the heart of the celebration. The day opened with Holy Mass in the Mother Church, during which a special blessing dedicated to all fathers was given. At the end of the service, the community walked in procession through the streets of the town for the lighting of the Fanoje, the bonfires that illuminate the historic center. The last Fanoja was lit at the hunters' section, a meeting point for the usual moment of sharing around the fire, amidst music, traditional flavors, and popular devotion.
