Chamber music and art in the historic venues of the Pisa area
The Fanny Mendelssohn International Music Festival, also known as the MusikArte Festival, is one of the most elegant and original events in the Province of Pisa, Tuscany. Organized by the Fanny Mendelssohn Music Association under the artistic direction of Sandra Landini and Francesca Amato, the festival is dedicated to celebrating female composers—figures who were often marginalized in music history because they were denied many privileges during their lifetimes.
Now in its 13th edition in 2026, the festival runs from March 27 to May 21, featuring fifteen concerts spread across the capital and surrounding towns: Pisa, San Giuliano Terme, Cascina, Vicopisano, and Pontedera. What makes the event unique is the choice of venues: rather than conventional concert halls, the performances take place in museums, historic villas, ancient palaces, and Romanesque parish churches, where live music restores these spaces to their role as centers of community and beauty.
The 2026 program stands out for its variety and the presence of soloists and ensembles from numerous countries: Croatia, Spain, Russia, Kazakhstan, Germany, the Czech Republic, Finland, and Switzerland. The opening ceremony is held in Pisa at the prestigious Palazzo Blu Auditorium, featuring a duo composed of Croatian cellist Cecilia Radic and Italian pianist Luigi Tanganelli. Among the most anticipated guests are the Forte Trio, the State Trio of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the historic, multi-award-winning Smetana Trio from the Czech Republic, founded in 1934.
Each concert is designed as a complete experience: before the performance, there is a guided tour of the historic venue, and in many cases, the event concludes with tastings of local products. It is a way to help the public discover lesser-known architectural gems, from Medici villas to Romanesque churches along the Via Francigena, pairing artistic heritage with world-class chamber music.
More than just a concert season, the Fanny Mendelssohn Festival is a widespread cultural project that connects the municipalities of the Pisan plain. Supported by the Municipality of Pisa and local authorities, the festival contributes to the tourism and cultural promotion of one of Tuscany's most history-rich areas, offering residents and visitors the chance to experience great music in exceptional settings.
The 13th edition of the Fanny Mendelssohn Festival presented fifteen classical and chamber music concerts over two months, from March 27 to May 21, 2026, connecting the capital and the surrounding Pisan towns. The central theme was once again the promotion of female composers, combined with the discovery of the area's artistic and architectural heritage.
The edition confirmed the festival's strong international calling, with performers from eight countries and a great variety of ensembles: duos, trios, piano recitals, and chamber groups. Each event combined the concert with a guided tour of the host venue and, in many cases, social moments featuring local product tastings.
Duo with Cecilia Radic (cello, Croatia) and Luigi Tanganelli (piano, Italy). Featuring music by Luise Adolpha Le Beau, Clara Schumann, Richard Strauss, and Amy Beach.
Béla Kovács Duo with Irene Ces (clarinet) and Manuel Tévar (piano). The program also includes a recital by the winner of the 31st G. Rospigliosi International Piano Competition, as part of the Young Talents project.
Concerts take place in historic sites across the Pisa area (Province of Pisa, Tuscany): in Pisa at the Palazzo Blu Auditorium, the Palazzo del Consiglio dei Dodici, and Palazzo Toscanelli; in San Giuliano Terme at the Hotel Bagni di Pisa and Villa del Lupo in Metato; in Cascina at the Romanesque churches; in Vicopisano at the Teatro di Via Verdi; in Pontedera at the Museo Piaggio; as well as at the villas of Coltano, Uliveto Terme, and Corliano.
Pisa is accessible by train (Pisa Centrale station, on lines to Florence, Rome, Genoa, and La Spezia) and by air via the Galileo Galilei International Airport. By car, it can be reached via the A11/A12 motorways and the SGC FI-PI-LI expressway; the surrounding towns (San Giuliano Terme, Cascina, Vicopisano, Pontedera) are well-connected by local roads and rail.
Each concert is preceded by a guided tour. For tickets, season passes, free entry, and reservations, it is recommended to visit the official website www.fannymendelssohn.eu or contact the organization directly.
