The operas of Giacomo Puccini on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli, in Torre del Lago
The Puccini Festival is one of Italy's most evocative opera events and the only festival in the world entirely dedicated to Giacomo Puccini, staged in the very locations where the composer lived, worked, and found his inspiration. The venue is the Gran Teatro all'Aperto Giacomo Puccini in Torre del Lago, a district of the Municipality of Viareggio, in the province of Lucca, in the heart of the Tuscan Versilia. The theatre stands just a few steps from the Villa Museo where Puccini lived and overlooks Lake Massaciuccoli, offering spectators a natural backdrop that becomes an integral part of the performance.
The first Puccini performance in Torre del Lago dates back to 1930, when, at the behest of the composer's friends who had passed away a few years earlier, La bohème was staged on the shores of the lake the Maestro loved so much. Since then, the festival has grown into an international event that attracts opera lovers from all over the world. The Fondazione Festival Pucciniano, which organizes the event, preserves and passes on the artistic legacy of one of the greatest opera composers of all time.
The program revolves around the masterpieces of the Puccinian repertoire. Each season features some of the most beloved titles by the Lucca-born composer — from Turandot to Tosca, from La bohème to Madama Butterfly, as well as La fanciulla del West and Manon Lescaut — entrusted to internationally renowned singers and top-tier conductors. Alongside the main operas, the festival enriches the calendar with opera galas, dance evenings, symphonic concerts, and side productions that explore the musical and theatrical world linked to Puccini.
Attending an opera at the Gran Teatro in Torre del Lago means experiencing Puccini's music in the same landscape that shaped his imagination. As evening falls and the lights reflect on the waters of Lake Massaciuccoli, the most famous arias in opera history resonate in the open air, in an atmosphere that blends art, nature, and memory. It is an experience that makes the Puccini Festival an unmissable destination for anyone visiting Tuscany and the Versilia region during the summer months.
The 2026 edition of the Puccini Festival celebrates the centenary of Turandot, the final masterpiece left unfinished by the Maestro, with a new production opening the season. Five Puccini titles will enliven the Gran Teatro all'Aperto in Torre del Lago from mid-July to early September, accompanied by dance evenings and concerts.
In addition to the operas, the festival offers two internationally acclaimed opera galas with Jonas Kaufmann (July 22) and Plácido Domingo (August 30), a dance evening with étoile Eleonora Abbagnato (July 27), and a film concert dedicated to Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone.
Announced singers in the various productions include international stars such as Anna Pirozzi, Roberto Alagna, and Aleksandra Kurzak. Theatrical performances and screenings will accompany the program at the Auditorium Caruso.
