Puglian theatre under the stars in Piazza Giovanni XXIII
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Fabula is the summer theatre festival promoted by the Municipality of Francavilla Fontana, in the heart of the province of Brindisi, Puglia. Launched in 2024, the event dedicates a series of evenings each July to local theatre companies, setting up its open-air stage in Piazza Giovanni XXIII, one of the most vibrant spots in the "City of the Imperials".
The idea behind Fabula is simple and generous: to offer the public evenings of entertainment while showcasing the talent of Puglia. The stage hosts a mix of dialect comedies, musicals, musical theatre, and social dramas, in a programme that balances lightheartedness with reflection. The festival features popular culture and fun performances, as well as moments of great music and contemporary history, with the aim of bringing different generations together through the joy of live theatre.
Fabula is part of the Municipality's rich summer calendar, the "Un sacco bella" event series, which brings Francavilla Fontana to life during the warmer months with shows, music, and family-friendly appointments. All festival evenings are free to attend, with non-reservable seating: a way to make theatre accessible to everyone and restore the square's historical role as a community meeting place.
An ancient Messapian city known for the monumental Castello Imperiali, Francavilla Fontana is one of the most important centres in the Brindisi hinterland. With Fabula, the Municipality chooses to focus on local amateur and professional companies, giving space to Salento dialect, singer-songwriter music, and major social issues. The result is a festival with a strong local identity, capable of filling the square and telling the story of Puglia through its own voices.
Following the first edition in 2024 and the success of the second in 2025, Fabula has established itself as one of the most anticipated events of the Francavilla summer. While the programme changes every year, the spirit remains the same: quality, free, open-air theatre in the centre of one of the most evocative cities in the province of Brindisi.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Fabula have not yet been announced by the Municipality of Francavilla Fontana. Based on previous editions, the festival is expected to take place in July in Piazza Giovanni XXIII, with performances by Puglian companies and free admission. The detailed programme will be published by the organisers in the weeks leading up to the event.
