Puppets, marionettes, and figures arrive at the Salone Polivalente in Scopello, in the Upper Valsesia valley
Every summer, the EuroPuppet International Itinerant Puppet Theatre Festival transforms the villages of the Upper Valsesia valley into a widespread stage dedicated to puppets, marionettes, shadow theatre, and object theatre. One of the stops on the tour is Scopello, a small town in the Province of Vercelli, Piedmont, overlooking the Valsesia valley and serving as a gateway to the Monterosa Ski area. Here, performances take place at the Salone Polivalente, in an intimate and family-friendly atmosphere that becomes a kingdom of animated figures for an afternoon.
EuroPuppet is organized by Kirby Teatro - La Bottega Teatrale APS of Fontanetto Po (VC), an organization active for over thirty years in children's and puppet theatre, under the artistic direction of Giuseppe Cardascio. The festival winds through various municipalities in the Upper Valsesia valley—including Scopello, Varallo, Civiasco, and Balmuccia—before continuing into the Lower Vercelli area and reaching the Province of Turin in Grugliasco. The program features diverse theatrical techniques: from traditional puppets to marionettes, shadow theatre, black theatre, and object theatre.
The program offers a selection of productions designed for family audiences, featuring classic stories and new plays brought to life with various techniques. Guest companies arrive from various Italian regions and abroad, offering a broad perspective on the contemporary puppet theatre scene.
Bringing a puppet theatre festival to a village like Scopello means combining the magic of animated figures with the beauty of the Valsesian mountains. This small town in the Province of Vercelli is one of the gateways to the Monterosa ski area and an ideal starting point for hiking and outdoor activities. The festival is an opportunity to discover the Upper Valsesia valley in summer, combining live performance with walks, nature, and local gastronomy. For families on holiday in the area, EuroPuppet is a high-quality cultural event that highlights small villages and their role as social and artistic hubs.
