The historic center of Atessa transforms into a sprawling stage for the European Music Festival
Every year, at the start of summer, the historic center of Atessa transforms into a vast, open-air stage for the European Music Festival. Joining hundreds of other European cities, this charming village in the Val di Sangro, in the province of Chieti, celebrates music in all its forms with an evening entirely dedicated to live performance. Squares, courtyards, and narrow lanes become musical hubs, creating a sprawling path that allows the public to wander freely from one genre to the next.
The initiative, organized by the Municipality of Atessa as part of the national Festa della Musica Italia network, features over ten performance spots spread throughout the historic center. Iconic locations such as Piazza Garibaldi, the 'Ndriano Arch, Largo San Nicola, Piazza Benedetti, and the courtyards of historic palaces host dozens of simultaneous performances. The program spans from rock to blues, funk to classical, singer-songwriter sets to folk, and even electronic music and DJ sets that keep the energy high until late at night.
The strength of the event lies in its community spirit: every edition brings together hundreds of artists, including bands, soloists, choirs, orchestras, music schools, folk groups, dancers, and DJs. Established professionals and rising stars share the same stages, creating a festive, intergenerational atmosphere. The event traditionally kicks off with a parade by the "Città di Atessa" Band and Majorettes in Piazza Garibaldi, signaling the start of a night of non-stop music.
The European Music Festival in Atessa is free to attend and welcomes everyone: families, young people, music enthusiasts, and curious visitors alike. Beyond the concerts, the evening is enriched by art exhibitions and displays open to the public, such as the Sassu Museum and the Permanent Nativity Scene Exhibition. It is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most characteristic villages in the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo, while experiencing its historic center in a vibrant, festive mood.

At Casa BCC, Simone Tango, Stefano Antonini, and Francesco Del Vecchio performed, while the 'Ndriano Arch hosted students from the Il Pentagramma study center and Maurizio Di Maio. Largo San Nicola was dedicated to choral music with the Coro Alpini Medio Sangro and the Coro Giovani Voci Dijoriane, while Piazza Benedetti hosted the Algeri Marino School Band and Giò Vescovi. Rock, blues, funk, classical, folk, and underground sounds intertwined through the alleys, complemented by art displays by Antonia Ciccarelli and other public exhibitions.
