A tribute to Aníbal Troilo and Argentine tango in the Abruzzo village of his roots
The Pichuco Festival is an intercultural event that the Municipality of Archi, a small village in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo, dedicates to the figure of Aníbal Carmelo Troilo, affectionately known as Pichuco. Born and raised in Buenos Aires (1914-1975), Troilo is considered one of the greatest bandoneon players, composers, and conductors in the history of Argentine tango. The bond with Archi is deep and authentic: the musician's paternal grandparents, Quirino and Concezia Troilo, left this very Abruzzo village in the late 19th century to seek their fortune in Argentina. The festival thus celebrates not only a great artist but also the memory of Italian emigration, turning it into an occasion for encounter and cultural exchange.
Following its 2025 debut, the festival returns to the historic center of Archi with a rich and structured second edition, spanning two days. The artistic direction is entrusted to Simone Marini, a bandoneon player and professor at the Pescara Conservatory. Special guests include Miguel Ángel Zotto, universally recognized as the world's leading representative of Argentine tango, and Daiana Guspero, one of the most authoritative female performers of the genre, with whom Zotto founded the Zotto Tango Academy in Milan.
The program weaves together music, literature, art, dance, and folk traditions. Among the most anticipated moments are the Gala Milonga with the live orchestra Lo Que Vendrá, performances by tango masters, round tables on the myth and origins of Troilo, and the photographic exhibition Toda una vida. La musica, gli affetti e le passioni di Aníbal Troilo, featuring some previously unseen material. There is also a spoken-word, dance, and music show created by Carla Cerbaso. The artistic dimension is complemented by a convivial one, featuring an Italo-Argentine menu that combines traditional Abruzzo dishes with asado and chorizo, as well as guided tours of the village and its palaces organized in collaboration with Borgo Abruzzo.
Organized by the Pichuco and Friends APS association, the festival is much more than a simple tribute: it is a cultural laboratory that brings the voice of the bandoneon of one of its most famous sons back to Archi, involving scholars, musicians, dancers, and enthusiasts from all over Italy and abroad. For the public, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of inland Abruzzo dressed in the melancholic elegance of the tango porteño.
The 2026 edition of the Pichuco Festival takes place over two days in the historic center of Archi. On Saturday, July 25, the opening is at 5:00 PM in Largo Fontana Tommaso Melchiorre with a round table dedicated to the myth, music, and origins of Aníbal Troilo, followed in the evening by the Gala Milonga with the live orchestra Lo Que Vendrá, conducted by Daniela Fidanza with vocals by Federico Pierro. On Sunday, July 26, the morning begins with guided tours of the village and its palaces, in collaboration with Borgo Abruzzo, while the convivial lunch in Largo Fontana offers an Italo-Argentine menu featuring Abruzzo traditions, asado, and chorizo. Highlights of the edition include performances by Miguel Ángel Zotto and Daiana Guspero, the performance Il Respiro che Resta / El Respiro que Queda by Carla Cerbaso, and the photographic exhibition Toda una vida on the life and passions of Troilo.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Archi (CH), Abruzzo, with events in Largo Fontana Tommaso Melchiorre, Piazza G. Marconi, and the Vittime di Rigopiano Council Chamber.
