A festival at the foot of the castle

Roccascalegna in Festival is one of the longest-running summer music events in inland Abruzzo. Every August, the small Piazza Municipio in Roccascalegna transforms into an open-air stage, dominated by the unmistakable silhouette of the medieval castle perched on a rocky spur. This natural backdrop, one of the most photographed in Italy, makes the festival a unique experience: live music intertwines with history and the intimate atmosphere of one of the most beautiful villages in the Sangro Aventino area, in the province of Chieti.

A long musical tradition

Established in the late 1990s, the festival celebrated its 28th edition in 2025, cementing its status as a landmark for the Abruzzese music scene and beyond. Over the years, the program has hosted singer-songwriters, folk bands, world music projects, and experimental sounds, always maintaining its free admission policy, which makes it an event open to everyone, residents and visitors alike. The programming prioritizes quality and musical research, with a special focus on Italian singer-songwriter traditions and local folk roots.

The 2025 edition

The 28th edition, held between August 17 and 23, 2025, offered four diverse evenings. The stage featured I Musici, a band from Teramo with a folk repertoire designed to get the square dancing, and Luca Romagnoli, frontman of the Lanciano-based project Management del dolore post operatorio, fresh from a Targa Tenco nomination for his debut solo album. The lineup also included the Abruzzese electro-folk project Di Sangro and a closing night dedicated to flamenco music, organized in collaboration with the Terre Vive association.

The village and the castle

Roccascalegna is a small town of just over a thousand inhabitants, located at an altitude of 455 meters in the Sangro Aventino region. Its medieval castle, which began as a Lombard outpost and was expanded during the Norman era, was restored in the 1990s and is now the town's symbol. Beyond the festival, the village offers historic churches, charming views, and traditional Abruzzese cuisine, making a visit the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic and still-unspoiled corner of Abruzzo.

A community event

Roccascalegna in Festival is much more than just a concert series: it is a celebration for the entire community of Roccascalegna and the many visitors who flock to the village every summer. The summer evenings, with the square packed and the castle illuminated in the background, reflect an image of an Abruzzo that knows how to showcase its heritage through culture and live music.
