Enna celebrates Frederick II through medieval re-enactments and European identity
The European Frederickian Week is one of the most heartfelt historical re-enactments in inland Sicily, held in Enna, the capital of the Free Municipal Consortium of the same name (the highest provincial capital in Italy). The event celebrates the figure of Frederick II of Swabia, the emperor who deeply loved this hilltop city and made it his summer residence, leaving behind iconic monuments such as the Tower of Frederick and the Lombardy Castle.
The unique feature of the Frederickian Week is its division into two distinct moments. The spring session, held in May, weaves together history and European dialogue: concerts, lectures on medieval games and culture, demonstrations of ancient arts like falconry and archery, medieval dinners, and the Europe Festival, which involves local schools every year. The summer session, in July, serves as the spectacular heart of the event with the Frederickian Days.
The most anticipated event is the Grand Frederickian Historical Pageant, which sets off from the Octagonal Tower of Frederick and winds through the historic center to the Lombardy Castle, brought to life by dozens of Sicilian historical groups, musicians, drummers, flag-wavers, and jugglers. Alongside the pageant, the Palio of the ancient districts takes place, featuring a competition between the city's historic quarters—A Chiazza, Beddivirdi, U Pupulu, Funnurisi, San Pitru, and Sarbaturi—alongside a medieval market and tastings of local products.
Promoted by the House of Europe of Enna with the support of the Municipality of Enna and the Free Municipal Consortium, the Frederickian Week is more than just a re-enactment: it is an opportunity to reflect on the cultural legacy of Frederick II and the idea of a united Europe, in line with the values of dialogue and coexistence that the event has upheld for twenty years.
2026 marks the twentieth edition of the European Frederickian Week, an important milestone for Enna. The May session (4-10) opened on Monday the 4th at the F. P. Neglia Municipal Theater with the "For Europe" concert by the Enna Music High School, brought to life by the performers of the Officina Medievale Enna. The following days featured lectures on medieval games, a Celtic harp concert at the Church of the Holy Spirit, demonstrations of falconry and archery at the former Capuchin Convent, a medieval dinner, and, on Saturday the 9th, the Europe Festival with the school awards ceremony. The session concluded on Sunday the 10th with the historical archery tournament at the Tower of Frederick.
The program continues with the Frederickian Days from July 3-5, 2026: historical market, Palio of the districts, and the Grand Frederickian Historical Pageant, which departs from the Octagonal Tower and reaches the Lombardy Castle with historical groups, flag-wavers, and musicians from all over Sicily.
Events take place in the historic center of Enna and at various iconic city landmarks: the F. P. Neglia Municipal Theater, the Tower of Frederick, the Lombardy Castle, the former Capuchin Convent, and the city's main squares.
Enna is accessible via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Enna exit). The train station is located in the valley, connected to the upper town by bus. Most events are free to attend; some appointments (medieval dinner, ancient arts) require a contribution and reservation.
