The annual Valdinievole history conference in the village of Buggiano Castello
The "Enrico Coturri" Historical Studies Day is the most significant cultural event in the calendar of Buggiano Castello, an ancient medieval village in the municipality of Buggiano, located in the heart of the Tuscan Valdinievole. Every year in early June, the halls of the Palazzo Pretorio welcome historians, researchers, and university professors for a day entirely dedicated to exploring a specific theme linked to the local territory, its landscape, and its historical roots.
The conference is named after Enrico Coturri, the scholar who founded the Buggiano Castello Cultural Association in 1979 and served as its first president. Since then, the Studies Day has become a benchmark for local and regional historiography, gathering contributions over its many editions that have greatly enriched our knowledge of the Valdinievole. The Proceedings of each conference are collected and published, forming a valuable series of studies available for consultation at the Buggiano Municipal Library.
Each edition focuses on a monographic topic: from the borderlands of the Valdinievole to medieval fortification, and from the agricultural landscape to the literary and artistic history of the area. The presentations, delivered by professors from Italian universities and industry experts, are divided into morning and afternoon sessions, featuring coordination and open debate. While the scientific standard is high, the content remains accessible to anyone with a passion for history and local heritage.
The setting is Buggiano Castello, known as the village of citrus due to its unique microclimate, which allows for the cultivation of citrus fruits and Mediterranean plants in the historic gardens of the village's residences. Attending the Studies Day is also an opportunity to experience the intimate atmosphere of this corner of Tuscany, wandering through medieval alleys, the Pieve, and the Palazzo Pretorio.
The "Enrico Coturri" Historical Studies Day offers free admission and provides a unique chance to engage directly with historical research by listening to scholars and participating in discussions. It is promoted by the Buggiano Castello Cultural Association, often in collaboration with the Municipality of Buggiano.
The 47th "Enrico Coturri" Historical Studies Day brought together scholars and university professors in Buggiano Castello to discuss the theme "The Hills of Valdinievole: History, Landscape, and Conservation." The conference, promoted by the Buggiano Castello Cultural Association, explored the hills as a historical subject, landscape transformations, and the forms of medieval settlement in the Valdinievole.
Proceedings began at 9:00 AM at the Palazzo Pretorio and concluded in the late afternoon, alternating between morning and afternoon sessions with moments for coordination and debate. The 2026 event once again confirmed its role as a key reference point for the historiography of the Valdinievole.
