Five days of books, reading, and encounters in the heart of Sicily
The Enna Book and Reading Festival is one of the most deeply rooted cultural events in central Sicily. Every year, during the days of March, the capital of the Erei Mountains transforms into a large, widespread laboratory dedicated to reading, capable of involving thousands of children, teenagers, teachers, and families. The event is promoted by the Cultural Association APS Amici della Festa del Libro - Il sasso nello stagno, in close collaboration with the Municipality of Enna—recognized as a 'City that Reads' for the 2024-2026 triennium—along with numerous local schools and the Kore University.
The festival is not concentrated in a single location but is distributed across multiple venues in Enna's historic center: the Urban Center housed in the former Capuchin Convent, the heart of the event; the Teatro Francesco Paolo Neglia; the Municipal Library; the Casa di Giufà Media Library; the Al Kenisa literary café; as well as squares, gardens, and outdoor spaces. A distinctive feature is the focus on inclusion: the festival also enters correctional facilities, bringing reading and dialogue within prison walls.
The program weaves together different genres and languages:
Each edition revolves around a theme that serves as a common thread for meetings and workshops, often linked to the environment, sustainability, and the relationship between words and the world. This is how the festival manages to combine the promotion of reading with civic education, giving a voice to a community that uses books as a tool for collective growth.
Situated at an altitude of nearly a thousand meters, Enna is the highest provincial capital in Italy and dominates the heart of Sicily from above. In this evocative setting, the Book and Reading Festival has become an eagerly awaited appointment for schools and families from across the province of Enna and neighboring territories, helping to make the city a point of reference for culture in the center of the island.
The 2026 edition of the Enna Book and Reading Festival, the fifteenth, took place from March 23 to 27, 2026 with the theme Paths, an invitation to travel, explore, and safeguard cultural routes linked to the environment and respect for the world. There were 32 guests, including authors, illustrators, and performers.
The inauguration was entrusted to the show Se fossi te non sarei me, followed by Stretta è la soglia, larga la via for the little ones, both signed by Alfonso Cuccurullo and Matteo Razzini at the Teatro Neglia. At the Urban Center, exhibitions were set up with works by street artist Ale Puro, plates by Alessandro Montagnana, and creations with natural colors by Alessia Roselli, visitable until March 27. Among the workshops, Smile!!! and Il corpo della voce on read-aloud sessions were sold out.
Guests included writer Massimo Baraldi with the project Sconfinamenti - Storie dal carcere in libertà , authors Chiara Moscardelli and Ellen Strömberg, and illustrator Nicoletta Bertelle, with meetings distributed between morning and afternoon and moments dedicated to schools, the community, and the correctional facilities of Enna.
The festival takes place every year in March, with a five-day program plus several previews.
Activities are distributed throughout the center of Enna: Urban Center (former Capuchin Convent), Teatro Francesco Paolo Neglia, Municipal Library, Casa di Giufà Media Library, and other city spaces.
Enna can be reached by car via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Enna exit). The Enna train station is located in the lower part of the city, connected to the historic center by urban buses. The nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Palermo-Punta Raisi.
Most events have free admission; some workshops and meetings require reservations and can sell out quickly. For the updated program and participation details, it is recommended to consult the official website and the festival's social media pages.
