The return of Carlantino's sons and daughters to the heart of the Monti Dauni

The Emigrant's Festival is one of the most defining events of the Carlantino Summer, the rich calendar of activities that brings Carlantino to life every August. This village of a few hundred inhabitants is nestled in the Monti Dauni, in the westernmost part of the province of Foggia, in Apulia. The festival stems from the deep bond between the town and the many Carlantinesi who, over the decades, left the Fortore Valley to work in other parts of Italy or abroad: every summer, many of them return to their birthplace, and the community welcomes them with a day dedicated entirely to them.
More than just a show, the Emigrant's Festival is a collective ritual of belonging. Families reunite, generations meet, and stories of departures and returns are shared. The Municipality, the Pro Loco, and the Festival Committee organize social gatherings, live music, and meeting opportunities in the squares and streets of the historic center to make those who live away for most of the year feel at home. It is how a small village in the Daunian hinterland fights depopulation: by keeping the thread that connects those who stayed and those who left alive.
The Emigrant's Festival is part of a program of events that, in the first half of August, accompanies residents and visitors with sporting, cultural, religious, and gastronomic appointments. Highlights include the patronal feast of Saint Donatus, with mass, a procession, and fireworks, and the Farmers' Festival, featuring the traditional tractor parade, a thanksgiving mass for the harvest, and tastings of typical products from the Fortore Valley. Together, these events make August the month when Carlantino is filled with life.
Carlantino rises in the Monti Dauni, a stone's throw from the Occhito reservoir, one of the largest artificial basins in Europe, in a landscape of hills, woods, and waters that marks the border between Apulia and Molise. Those who attend the Emigrant's Festival thus discover a little-known and authentic corner of the province of Foggia, characterized by genuine hospitality, peasant traditions, and local produce.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Emigrant's Festival have not yet been published. As every year, the event is expected to take place in the first half of August, as part of the Carlantino Summer. To find out the dates and details, it is recommended to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Carlantino and the Pro Loco.
Carlantino can be reached by car from the A14 motorway (exit Poggio Imperiale or San Severo), continuing towards the Fortore Valley and the Monti Dauni; the village is a few dozen kilometers from Foggia. The reference railway station is San Severo, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
The festival is held in August, as part of the Carlantino Summer. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to check the channels of the Municipality of Carlantino and the Pro Loco for the updated program.
The events of the Carlantino Summer are generally free to attend and take place outdoors, in the squares and streets of the historic center.
