The jazz week of the Estate Musicale Frentana in Lanciano
EMF Jazz Week is the section dedicated to jazz within the Estate Musicale Frentana, the historic festival promoted in Lanciano, in the province of Chieti, by the Associazione Amici della Musica Fedele Fenaroli. Every summer, the event transforms the historic center and the spaces of the Parco delle Arti Musicali into an open-air laboratory where jazz meets a wider audience through evening concerts, educational projects, and musical outreach initiatives.
EMF Jazz Week is not an isolated event, but a chapter of one of the longest-running musical seasons in Abruzzo: the Estate Musicale Frentana, now in its fifty-fifth edition, offers over forty events including symphonic concerts, chamber music, original productions, masterclasses, and of course jazz, spread across the summer and winter seasons. Within this program, the jazz week occupies a distinct space, with artistic direction entrusted to leading musicians from the national scene.
The charm of the festival lies in its choice of venues: concerts take place in the squares of Lanciano's center, such as Corso Trento e Trieste and Piazza Pace, and in the intimate Cloister of the Parco delle Arti Musicali, the home of the organizing association. Events in the squares are generally free of charge, in collaboration with the Municipality of Lanciano, while concerts at the cloister and the Teatro Fenaroli are part of the Estate Musicale Frentana's ticketing and subscription system.
Alongside the concerts, EMF Jazz Week dedicates ample space to the educational and inclusive dimension. The Social Music Laboratory brings together professional musicians and amateurs to focus on improvisation and playing together, with the goal of fostering interaction through music. This is complemented by masterclasses and training projects that make the festival a reference point for enthusiasts and young instrumentalists in the Abruzzo region.
Located in the heart of the province of Chieti, Lanciano has been a lively center of the Frentano hinterland for centuries, famous for its historical heritage and a musical tradition that the Estate Musicale Frentana has managed to preserve and revitalize. Today, EMF Jazz Week represents one of the most immediate ways to discover this vocation, offering residents and visitors high-quality evenings in atmospheric settings, characterized by a jazz that is open, curious, and rooted in the community.
EMF Jazz Week 2026 opened the jazz week of the Estate Musicale Frentana on July 3 along Corso Trento e Trieste, in Lanciano, with the concert Suite for Miles performed by the Giovanni Falzone Libera Band: a tribute to Miles Davis with free admission, organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Lanciano.
On July 5, in the Cloister of the Parco delle Arti Musicali, the final concert of the Social Music Laboratory directed by Giovanni Falzone was held, marking the conclusion of a journey that brought together professional musicians and amateurs to focus on improvisation and playing together.
The jazz programming for the 2026 edition continued in the autumn, on October 18 at the Teatro Fenaroli, with an event dedicated to Colonial Music.
Lanciano can be reached by car via the A14 motorway (Lanciano-Val di Sangro exit) and by train via the Lanciano station, which is connected to the regional Abruzzo network. The reference airport is Pescara (Abruzzo Airport, about 50 km away).
Some concerts in the squares are free to attend; events at the Cloister of the Parco delle Arti Musicali and the Teatro Fenaroli are ticketed, with tickets and subscriptions for the Estate Musicale Frentana available online and at the association's office.
