Two days of costumes, parades, and music in the heart of the Baronia region
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Carife, a village of just over a thousand residents perched 740 meters above sea level between the Ufita Valley and the Daunian Mountains, Carnival is more than just a single afternoon. Over the years, local associations have developed a two-part formula: «El Carnaval», an evening designed for young people and adults, and «El Carnaval de Los Niños», a party reserved for children. These are two different ways to experience the same tradition, both hosted at the «Gaetano Zizza» Social Center, located in Largo Mons. Vincenzo Salvatore in the heart of the village.
The first evening is the most anticipated by the youth of the Baronia. It begins at dinner time with the opening of food stalls, where traditional Irpinian flavors accompany a room that gradually fills with masks and improvised costumes. Late in the evening, the focus shifts to music: the DJ set turns the social center into a dance floor that keeps going until late at night. No tickets or advance bookings are required; the party is open to everyone, and the only unwritten rule is to show up in costume.
The second event, scheduled for Shrove Tuesday, completely changes the tone. Families and children in costume gather in Piazza San Giovanni in the early afternoon. From there, a parade through the village streets begins, winding through the town before reaching the Social Center, where the party continues indoors with entertainment, bouncy castles, cotton candy, and popcorn. It is a moment when the entire Carife community comes together, from grandparents to grandchildren, in one of the few occasions of the year that truly fills the village streets.
The two days are curated by the Tourniquet and Gli Amici r' lu Callar associations, local volunteer groups active year-round in the village's cultural life, with the patronage of the Municipality of Carife. It is a model typical of small towns in inland Irpinia: no massive budgets, but a strong associative fabric that ensures a continuous calendar of events, from Carnival to the St. Joseph's Bonfire, and from the Ancient Cross Fair to summer festivals.
Carnival is one of the most powerful expressions of popular culture in Irpinia: from the zeza in Mercogliano and Montoro to the tarantella in Montemarano, every village preserves its own version. Carife fits into this landscape with a more contemporary and family-oriented profile, complementing the historical float parade organized by the Pro Loco with a more informal and youthful format. The result is a period, between February and early March depending on the date of Easter, when the Baronia village comes alive with costumes, music, and food.
Carife is one of the smallest municipalities in the province of Avellino, with a population of around 1,400 and a territory bordering Castel Baronia, Frigento, Guardia Lombardi, San Nicola Baronia, Sturno, Trevico, and Vallata. The patron saint is Saint John the Baptist, celebrated on June 24th, and the village retains the compact layout typical of Upper Irpinia's Apennine centers. Visitors arriving for Carnival will find an authentic setting, without tourist infrastructure, but with a community that gladly opens its doors to those from outside.
No official communication regarding a 2026 edition of «El Carnaval» and «El Carnaval de Los Niños» in Carife has been identified. The dates mentioned above are therefore indicative and serve only to place the event on the calendar: they should not be considered confirmed.
The reference period remains that of Carnival, which in 2026 culminates with Shrove Tuesday in mid-February. In the previous edition, the two days were set between the weekend and the final Tuesday of Carnival, with the evening for adults at the «Gaetano Zizza» Social Center and the children's parade in the afternoon.
Announcements are usually published on the social media channels of the Tourniquet and Gli Amici r' lu Callar associations and on the Municipality of Carife portal, in the province of Avellino, as well as on the Sistema Irpinia events agenda managed by the Province. This entry will be updated as soon as confirmation arrives from the organizers.
The heart of the event is the «Gaetano Zizza» Social Center, located at Largo Mons. Vincenzo Salvatore 1, in Carife (AV). The meeting point for the children's parade is Piazza San Giovanni, just a short walk from the social center. The venue is fully accessible.
By car: take the Grottaminarda exit on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, then follow state and provincial roads towards the Baronia area. The reference airport is Naples Capodichino. There are no direct rail connections to the village; the car remains the most practical means of transport, with parking available in the town center.
Admission to both days has been free and open to the public in recent editions. Only food and drinks at the stalls are paid for.
Carife is located at an altitude of 740 meters, and late winter evenings can be cold: it is advisable to wear warm clothing under costumes, especially for the outdoor parade on Shrove Tuesday. For families, the afternoon event is the most suitable for young children.
