Two evenings of beer, food, and music in the Villa Comunale, the balcony of Irpinia
The Beer Festival is one of the events that close the summer season in Frigento, a village in Alta Irpinia in the Province of Avellino, in the heart of inland Campania. The official calendar places it on Sunday, August 23 and Monday, August 24, 2026, in the Villa Comunale, the public garden that becomes the town's open-air living room in summer. It is not an event built for mass crowds: it is a community festival where the beer mug is primarily a pretext to gather outdoors during the final evenings of August, when the air at this altitude starts to get crisp.
The location is no coincidence. The Villa Comunale of Frigento has been repeatedly highlighted by residents in the I Luoghi del Cuore (Places of the Heart) census promoted by FAI, appearing in the 2012, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022 editions: a constant affection that shows how much that garden is part of the town's identity. Hosting the festival here means bringing the event into the daily life of the village, just a stone's throw from the town hall in Piazza Municipio and the streets of the historic center.
Those who climb up to Frigento for the festival find much more than just an evening event. The town stands at 911 meters above sea level and is part of the Borghi piรน belli d'Italia (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy) circuit. From the Panoramica dei Limiti, the pedestrian path with wide loggias that runs along the ridge, the view embraces five regions and eleven provinces, even catching glimpses of the Matese and Maiella massifs. At the highest point of the town, the Roman cisterns in opus incertum from the Republican age are preserved, a hydraulic system of eleven rooms, four of which have survived to this day and three of which are visitable. The picture is completed by the Cathedral, a witness to the period when Frigento was a bishop's seat, rebuilt in its upper part after the devastating earthquake of 1732.
The Beer Festival is a piece of the Estate Frigentina 2026, the rich calendar of initiatives signed by the Municipality of Frigento to promote the territory and local traditions, realized with the support and collaboration of local associations: Pro Loco Frigentina APS, the Youth Forum, the Public Assistance, Frimact, and the Associazione Organetto 2020, among others. The program runs from June to the end of August and touches the Villa Comunale, the Campetto PAF, the Caritas Center, the Piano della Croce, and other symbolic places of the village.
In August, the Beer Festival fits into a very dense sequence of events: the Accordion Festival from August 10 to 13, the celebrations for Maria SS. Assunta and San Rocco on August 15 and 16 with the traditional parade of sheaf wagons, the treasure hunt on the 17th, the opening of the Borgo del Muro on the 20th, and the Thanksgiving Festival on August 27, which officially bids farewell to the season.
Beer festivals are a classic of the Irpinian summer, from Petruro Irpino to Mirabella Eclano and Montella, and in Frigento, the event has already appeared in the town's summer calendars in past years. Its return to the 2026 calendar, in an identity-defining place like the Villa Comunale, confirms the municipal administration's desire to alternate traditional events โ popular religiosity, the accordion, the flavors of the grass pea โ with lighter, cross-generational moments capable of bringing different ages together.
The 2026 Beer Festival takes place on August 23 and 24 in the Villa Comunale of Frigento, in the Province of Avellino. The event is part of the Estate Frigentina 2026, the summer calendar signed by the Municipality with the collaboration of the Pro Loco Frigentina APS, the Youth Forum, the Public Assistance, Frimact, and the Associazione Organetto 2020.
The two evenings are located in the final phase of the program: after the Accordion Festival (August 10-13), the celebrations for Maria SS. Assunta and San Rocco on the 15th and 16th with the parade of sheaf wagons, the treasure hunt on the 17th, the opening of the Borgo del Muro on the 20th, and the dinner in white on the 21st, the beer festival precedes the Thanksgiving Festival on August 27 at the Torretta, in the Parco di Pila ai Piani.
The Municipality has not yet released the times, musical programming, or details of the stands: the official calendar currently only indicates the location of the event. Updates are distributed through the institutional channels of the Municipality of Frigento and the pages of the local associations.
Frigento can be reached by car from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, taking the Grottaminarda exit and then driving up the provincial road towards the village. From Naples, the trip takes about an hour and a half; from Avellino, less than an hour. The Villa Comunale is located in the town center, a few steps from the town hall in Piazza Municipio.
The historic center is compact and partially pedestrianized: it is best to leave your car along the roads leading into town and continue on foot, arriving a little early on festival evenings. For those traveling by camper, the Pro Loco Frigentina manages a municipal camper area.
At an altitude of 911 meters, even late August evenings can be cool: a light sweatshirt is more than useful. Wear comfortable shoes for the village's sloping streets and for the scenic walk along the Limiti.
