About Sele Carnival

Every February, Eboli transforms into a grand open-air theater: the Sele Carnival brings papier-mâché floats, masked groups, and dance schools to the streets between the Santa Cecilia district and the town center. Promoted by the Municipality of Eboli and coordinated by the Seleventum association, the event weaves together the creativity of master papier-mâché artists with the Don Annibale farce, an ancient expression of the Zeza tradition recognized as intangible cultural heritage of the Campania Region.

The Sele Carnival, Eboli's most anticipated festival

Every winter, the Sele Carnival fills the streets of Eboli, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Piana del Sele, with color. Promoted by the Municipality of Eboli and coordinated by the Seleventum association, the Eboli carnival has grown over the years to become one of the most popular events in this part of Campania: it mobilizes neighborhoods, districts, committees, and volunteer associations, with work beginning months before the parade.

Papier-mâché floats

The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats. Master papier-mâché artists work for months in the city's warehouses, coordinated by Seleventum president Paolo Di Lorenzo, to build imposing structures animated by moving mechanisms. Alongside Seleventum, various local groups participate in the creation of the floats:

  • APS Campolongo Aversana Neighborhood Committee
  • Cumsele Association
  • Sinergia IV Group
  • #31# Group
  • Emmanuel Community

The themes change from year to year, blending satire, current events, and popular imagination: from the provocation of « Sic transit gloria mundi – The Popess » to the homage to Iberian culture in « Spain », from the school dreamed of by children in « The school I want » to the space journey of « Apollo XXVI », and floats designed for children like « Cars » and « The Lion Tamer ».

Between Santa Cecilia and the town center

One of the hallmarks of the Sele Carnival is the decision not to concentrate everything in one place. The calendar alternates parades in the Santa Cecilia district, in the coastal countryside of the Piana, and the grand parade in the center of Eboli, which travels through Piazza Carlo Levi, Viale Amendola, and Via Matteotti up to Piazza della Repubblica. Music, confetti, masked groups, dance schools, and food areas accompany the passage of the floats, along a route designed to be easily followed on foot.

The Don Annibale farce and the Zeza tradition

Eboli also guards one of the oldest carnival expressions in Campania: the Don Annibale farce, a local variation of the Zeza, recognized as intangible cultural heritage of the Campania Region. It is a traveling popular theater performance, carried out by the Farsa Don Annibale association of Eboli, which moves through the streets with masks, songs, and dialect dialogues. In January 2026, the city hosted the first traveling edition of the « States General of the Zeza » at the San Bartolomeo Auditorium, two days of university studies and performances by over fifteen carnival delegations, born from an initiative of the MuMasca museum in Montoro. It is no coincidence that the chosen dates follow January 17, Saint Anthony the Abbot, which according to popular saying opens the season: « Sant'Antuon' masks and sounds ».

A community carnival

The Sele Carnival is above all a collective effort: neighborhood groups build the floats with their own resources, dance schools prepare the choreography, and families make the costumes. In 2026, this spirit expanded beyond municipal borders with the twinning with the Campagna Carnival, which brought floats from the neighboring town to parade in Eboli, strengthening collaboration between the district's papier-mâché groups.

When to go and what to expect

The parades take place during the carnival period, between late January and early March depending on the liturgical calendar, with the main event on Shrove Tuesday. It is a popular festival suitable for all ages: free admission, many children in masks, confetti and streamers, stalls with traditional sweets, and street food. Those visiting the area can combine the day with a walk in the historic center of Eboli, dominated by the Colonna castle, or a stop at the nearby sites of the Piana del Sele and Cilento.

Sele Carnival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Sele Carnival was divided into three events between February 15 and 22, split between the Santa Cecilia district and the center of Eboli. Seven allegorical floats created by Seleventum and local groups enlivened the parades, accompanied by music, dancing, confetti, and food areas. The twinning with the Campagna Carnival also brought floats from the neighboring town to the city, while in January, the San Bartolomeo Auditorium hosted the « States General of the Zeza ».

Three days between the outskirts and the center

The 2026 Sele Carnival, promoted by the Municipality of Eboli and coordinated by the Seleventum association, chose a distributed formula: two parades in the Santa Cecilia district and the grand Shrove Tuesday parade in the town center. A choice designed to involve both the Piana and the heart of the city.

The floats of the edition

Seven papier-mâché allegorical floats made up the procession, the result of the work of master papier-mâché artists coordinated by Seleventum president Paolo Di Lorenzo. Among the most talked-about were « Sic transit gloria mundi – The Popess » by the #31# Group, which satirically imagines a future with a female pope, and « Spain » by the Cumsele association, a colorful homage to Iberian culture. Completing the parade were « The Lion Tamer » and « Cars » by Seleventum, « The school I want » by the Sinergia IV Group, « Apollo XXVI » by the Campolongo Aversana Neighborhood Committee, and « Totò Sapore » by the Emmanuel Community.

Twinning with Campagna

A novelty of 2026 was the twinning with the Campagna Carnival: the floats from the neighboring municipality paraded in Eboli on February 17 in the center and on February 22 in Santa Cecilia, in a meeting between papier-mâché groups defined by the organizers as an exchange of ideas, creativity, and artistic mastery.

The Zeza takes the stage

In January, before the parades, Eboli hosted the first traveling edition of the « States General of the Zeza » (January 18 and 25, 2026) at the San Bartolomeo Auditorium, with presentations by university professors in the morning and performances by over fifteen carnival delegations from Southern Italy in the afternoon. A recognition of the value of the Don Annibale farce, intangible cultural heritage of the Campania Region.
