The Epiphany concert by the Algund wind band at the Kursaal in Merano
The Dreikönigskonzert of the Algunder Musikkapelle is the event with which the wind band of Algund, in the province of Bolzano, opens the South Tyrolean cultural season every year. It takes place punctually on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany (known in German as Dreikönigstag, the Feast of the Three Kings), within the elegant setting of the Kursaal in Merano. Established in 1948, it is considered the oldest and most traditional indoor concert (traditionsreichstes Saalkonzert) among the wind bands of South Tyrol.
The Algunder Musikkapelle is one of the most esteemed wind ensembles in the region, with over 175 years of history. Since 2000, it has been led by Kapellmeister Christian Laimer, under whose direction the ensemble has refined an ambitious symphonic repertoire. The band invests heavily in youth development, maintaining a youth orchestra and several chamber groups, with some members having achieved international recognition. The Epiphany concert is the most solemn and anticipated moment in a calendar that includes about ten events per year.
The Dreikönigskonzert features a program built with dramaturgical care, capable of alternating classical overtures, great operatic moments, and modern original compositions for symphonic wind orchestra. There is no shortage of brilliant marches, opening fanfares, and high-impact pieces chosen to seal the evening. It is an opportunity to hear, in a rich and refined orchestral arrangement, composers ranging from the Italian operatic repertoire to the great names of contemporary symphonic band literature.
Beyond the music, the Dreikönigskonzert is also a moment of community life: during the evening, new members are welcomed into the band, and musicians are awarded for their years of faithful service. The tradition concludes with a convivial dinner at the Thalguterhaus in Algund, sealing the bond between the band and its community.
For Algund and the entire Merano and surroundings area in Trentino-Alto Adige, the Epiphany concert represents the true start of the cultural year. The combination of the elegance of the Kursaal in Merano, the solemnity of the holiday, and the musical quality of the band makes it an event beloved by the local public and appreciated by visitors alike.
The 76th edition of the Dreikönigskonzert of the Algunder Musikkapelle took place on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at 5:00 PM at the Kursaal in Merano. Kapellmeister Christian Laimer presented a program with a carefully crafted dramaturgical structure, opening with the Ausseer Festfanfare by Gottfried Ritter von Freiberg and culminating, in the first part, in the Gran Finale from the third act of Don Carlos by Giuseppe Verdi. The second part featured the Florentiner Marsch by Julius Fučík, the atmospheric Traveler by David Maslanka, and, as a brilliant finale, Olympica by Jan Van der Roost. During the evening, new members were welcomed, and musicians were awarded for their years of service.
Conducted by Kapellmeister Christian Laimer. Highlights: the Gran Finale from Verdi's Don Carlos and the conclusion with Olympica by Jan Van der Roost, featuring fanfares, powerful rhythms, and majestic themes.
