About Dorffest Lajen

In the heart of the Isarco Valley, the village of Laion/Lajen celebrates its most cherished festival every summer, dedicated to Walther von der Vogelweide, the renowned medieval minstrel who, according to local tradition, hailed from these very mountains. For three days, the village center transforms into a grand open-air stage featuring live music, the traditional barrel tapping, South Tyrolean culinary specialties, and a captivating medieval historical pageant complete with knights, ladies, artisans, and the troubadour himself. A defining event for the municipality of Laion, in the heart of South Tyrol.

A festival in honor of the minstrel Walther von der Vogelweide

The Dorffest Lajen is the major village festival of Laion/Lajen, a Dolomite village in the Isarco Valley (Eisacktal), in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of South Tyrol (Alto Adige). The event is dedicated to Walther von der Vogelweide (c. 1165–1230), one of the most important poets and singers of the German Middle Ages, the celebrated Minnesänger who, according to a deeply rooted local tradition, was born in Laion, long considered one of his most likely places of origin.

The bond between Laion and the troubadour

The connection between the municipality of Laion and Walther von der Vogelweide is profound and visible throughout the village: the caged bird depicted on the municipal coat of arms is a clear reference to the minstrel, while the Minnehus museum and the themed trail named after him invite residents and visitors to discover the poet and the art of medieval courtly lyric. The village festival thus serves not only as a community gathering but also as a celebration of the village's historical and cultural identity.

Three days of music, tradition, and gastronomy

The Dorffest takes place over a summer weekend and brings the center of Lajen Dorf to life with a rich and varied program. The opening evening is dedicated to live music, featuring concerts by South Tyrolean bands and a dance party. The main day includes the traditional barrel tapping (Fassanstich), greetings from officials and guests of honor, further musical performances, and outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling days, complete with prize draws.

  • Live music with traditional South Tyrolean bands and groups
  • Barrel tapping and local culinary specialties
  • Brass bands from the village and surrounding areas
  • Medieval historical pageant with costumed participants

The medieval historical pageant

The most anticipated and spectacular moment is the historical pageant that parades through the village streets: a long, costumed procession that evokes the Middle Ages with heralds and fanfares, farmers with their animals, citizens and artisans with their carts, the village band, knights on horseback, jesters, court ladies alongside the minstrel Walther von der Vogelweide, nobles in carriages, monks, and cardinals. A spectacle that blends historical re-enactment, folklore, and popular traditions, beloved by families and visitors alike.

An event in the heart of South Tyrol

Immersed in the Dolomite landscape, among the vineyards and forests of the Isarco Valley, the Dorffest Lajen is an authentic opportunity to experience the hospitality and traditions of the municipality of Laion. Between South Tyrolean gastronomy, folk music, and historical memory, the festival represents one of the village's signature summer events.
