A grassroots festival in the Monferrato hills

The Desperate Hills Festival is one of the most genuine and independent fixtures in the Piedmont alternative music scene. Born in 2024 in the Monferrato Casalese area, in the province of Alessandria, the festival is the result of the hard work of a collective of young enthusiasts who decided to turn their passion for live music into an event capable of energizing a rural territory often left on the fringes of major circuits.

The underlying idea is as simple as it is radical: to bring high-quality concerts to the hills, far from big city stages, while championing emerging bands and the DIY culture. The festival stands as an act of cultural resistance in an area where many venues have closed, giving the community back a space for gathering, music, and exchange.

Punk, hardcore, and new sounds

The artistic identity of the Desperate Hills Festival has been clear since its first editions: punk, hardcore, midwest emo, alt-rock and, more recently, influences from the rap and electronic elements of the new Italian scene. The stage has hosted young bands and collectives that share a strong sense of local belonging and immense live energy. Alongside the concerts, the festival offers DJ sets, art exhibitions, food, and craft beers at affordable prices, all in an informal and welcoming atmosphere.

From Monferrato Casalese to Villanova Monferrato

After the first two editions hosted in San Giorgio Monferrato, in 2026 the festival moved to Villanova Monferrato, a municipality in the province of Alessandria, confirming its nomadic vocation and deep roots in the small towns of the Monferrato hills. Monferrato, a wine-growing landscape recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, provides a natural backdrop for an event that blends music, territory, and social connection.

An event for the whole community

With its free entry and do-it-yourself spirit, the Desperate Hills Festival appeals to a curious, young audience, as well as anyone looking to discover new Italian music in an authentic setting. The collective's winter events, dubbed Desperate Hills Shelter, round out a cultural project that stays active all year round and has become a landmark for the independent scene in Monferrato.
