The patronal feast of Cassino dedicated to Saint Benedict, Patron Saint of Europe
Every year, during the first three weeks of March, Cassino and the Abbey of Montecassino celebrate Saint Benedict of Nursia, founder of Western monasticism, patron of the city, and proclaimed Patron Saint of Europe by Pope Paul VI in 1964. The "Days of Saint Benedict" are more than just a religious anniversary: they are a blend of liturgical rites, historical memory, culture, and popular festivities that involve the entire community of the Municipality of Cassino, in the heart of southern Lazio.
The central moment of the celebrations is the Passing of Saint Benedict, which commemorates the saint's death, traditionally occurring on March 21st. On this date, a solemn Pontifical Mass is held in the Cathedral Basilica of Montecassino, while in the afternoon, the Co-Cathedral of Cassino hosts a liturgical celebration followed by a procession through the city streets. It is the spiritual heart of a festival that unites the monastery, perched on the mountain overlooking the city, and the urban fabric rebuilt after the destruction of the Second World War.
The symbol of the celebrations is the Benedictine torch, lit on March 1st in Nursia, the saint's birthplace, in the presence of the mayors and abbots of the three Benedictine cities — Nursia, Subiaco, and Cassino. Its journey unites the places that guard the memory of Benedict and promotes his message of peace and fraternity among European peoples, finally arriving at the Abbey of Montecassino for the solemn Vespers on the eve of the feast.
Alongside the religious dimension, the Days of Saint Benedict feature the "Terra Sancti Benedicti" historical pageant, with a costume parade, the swearing-in of the Militia, and the "Facite Festa" show of medieval music and dance. There is no shortage of major public concerts, sacred music by the Sistine Chapel Choir, and the "Pacis Nuntius" award, given to figures committed to the cause of peace. Local schools are involved in welcoming the torch, testifying to the deep bond between the saint and the new generations.
Promoted by the Municipality of Cassino together with the Abbey of Montecassino and the Diocese, the event represents one of the most cherished identity-defining appointments in the Province of Frosinone and the entire Lazio region. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover one of the foundational sites of European civilization: the monastery where Benedict wrote his Rule, "ora et labora," and from which a cultural and spiritual legacy radiated that still speaks with surprising relevance today.
The 2026 celebrations of the Passing of Saint Benedict united the Abbey of Montecassino and the city of Cassino in three weeks of spiritual, cultural, and civic events, dedicated to the themes of peace and European unity. The Benedictine torch, lit on March 1st in Nursia with the mayors and abbots of the Benedictine cities, traveled through the territory to Montecassino, where on March 20th the First Solemn Vespers were held, presided over by Dom Luca Fallica, followed by a concert by the Sistine Chapel Choir. On March 21st, the day of the Passing, the solemn Pontifical Mass in the Cathedral Basilica represented the culminating moment, followed in the evening by a liturgical celebration and a procession through the streets of Cassino.
Cassino is well-connected: by train on the Rome–Naples line (Cassino station), and by car via the A1 motorway, taking the Cassino exit. The Abbey of Montecassino can be reached from the city center along the scenic road that climbs the mountain.
Events are distributed between the Abbey of Montecassino, the Cathedral Basilica, the Co-Cathedral, and the main squares of the center (Piazza Corte, Piazza Diamare, Piazza De Gasperi, Piazza Labriola).
Celebrations and public concerts are free to attend. For information: Municipality of Cassino, tel. +39 0776 2981.
