A feast of faith in the Comino Valley

The Santa Maria della Pace Celebrations take place every year on August 16th in Montattico, a small village in the municipality of Casalattico, in the province of Frosinone, Lazio. We are in the heart of the Comino Valley, a secluded corner of the Ciociaria region tucked between the mountains, where religious traditions remain deeply rooted in community life. The recurrence is one of the most anticipated events of the village summer: during the Ferragosto holiday, it brings together residents, devotees from neighboring towns, and the many emigrants who return to their hometown during these days.

The 1837 vow and the memory of cholera

The devotion of the people of Montattico to the Madonna della Pace is rooted in a dramatic episode. In 1837, a terrible cholera epidemic brought death and suffering to Montattico. On July 29th of that year, the inhabitants—dressed in sackcloth, barefoot, with ropes around their necks and crowns of thorns on their heads—vowed themselves to the Madonna della Pace in a solemn penitential procession through the village streets. According to local lore passed down through generations, the cholera ceased to claim victims from that moment on. Since then, the community has never ceased to renew that vow, and the summer feast is the moment when this collective promise comes alive and is shared once again.

The Church of Madonna della Pace

The heart of the celebrations is the Church of Madonna della Pace, which stands in Montattico on the remains of an ancient Roman temple. This place of worship testifies to the long spiritual continuity of the site, which was Christianized over the centuries. In 1937, on the occasion of the centenary of the vow, it was the emigrants of Montattico who funded its restoration at their own expense: a gesture that speaks to the unbreakable bond between those who left and their land of origin, a bond that is renewed today whenever families scattered across the world return for the feast. The local parish is dedicated to S. Maria della Pace and S. Barbato, in honor of Saint Barbatus, the patron saint of the town.

The program of the celebrations

The day of August 16th revolves around the liturgical and devotional moments that have always characterized the feast: the solemn Holy Mass in honor of the Madonna della Pace and the procession with the statue of the Virgin through the streets of the village. Surrounding this religious core, the community and local associations enliven the town with social gatherings that make the event a meeting point for the entire village. Montattico, Casalattico, and the Ciociaria

The village, which according to tradition owes its name to Pomponius Atticus, a friend of Cicero, preserves medieval and Roman traces immersed in a landscape of mountains and woods, serving as a starting point for picturesque hiking trails. Casalattico is also known for its strong connection with Ireland, a historical destination for local emigration, and for its twinning with the town of Naas. However, the feast of Santa Maria della Pace remains the most authentic moment to grasp the identity of this small community in the Comino Valley, where faith, memory, and belonging have been intertwined for nearly two centuries.
