Saint Augustine Festival (Macchia)

A celebration of devotion in the Comino Valley

The Saint Augustine Festival takes place every year towards the end of August in the hamlet of Macchia, one of the nuclei that make up the municipality of Casalattico, in the province of Frosinone, southern Lazio. Nestled in the Comino Valley, on the edge of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, Macchia is a close-knit community that, during the days of its patronal feast, rediscovers its deepest identity: that of a mountain village bound to the land, faith, and memory.

The Church of Saint Augustine

The heart of the celebration is the church dedicated to Saint Augustine, commissioned by Giovanni Matassa and blessed in 1794. The building houses life-sized frescoes and a precious 17th-century wooden statue of the saint, restored in 1998 thanks to the devotion of the faithful. The community's participation centers around this image: on the day of the feast, the statue is carried in procession along the streets of the hamlet, accompanied by the songs and prayers of the inhabitants.

Tradition, return, and community

Like many villages in the Ciociaria region and the Comino Valley, Casalattico experienced significant emigration: numerous families left during the 20th century, many heading to Ireland and Great Britain. This is where the family of Charles Forte, one of the most famous hospitality entrepreneurs of the last century, originated. For this reason, the August feast takes on a special value: it coincides with the period when emigrants and their descendants return to their home village, becoming a moment of reunion, intergenerational meeting, and the rediscovery of one's roots.

The festival program

The festivities follow the classic structure of patronal feasts in southern Lazio, with both a religious and communal dimension. The central moment is the solemn mass in honor of Saint Augustine, followed by the procession with the saint's statue through the streets of Macchia. The sacred rites are usually accompanied by moments of conviviality and popular celebration that enliven the hamlet and bring together residents and visitors.

Casalattico and its territory

The name Casalattico refers to Pomponius Atticus, a friend of Cicero, who according to tradition owned a villa in these parts during Roman times. The municipality, the least populous in the Comino Valley, preserves a fascinating heritage: the medieval tower, the Roman bridge over the Melfa river, religious architecture, and mountain landscapes rising toward the surrounding peaks. Visiting Macchia during the Saint Augustine festival means discovering a lesser-known, authentic Italy, where religious tradition continues to mark the rhythm of village life.
