The race through the Dolomites on the former railway, from Cortina d'Ampezzo to Dobbiaco
The Cortina Dobbiaco Run is one of the most beloved and recognizable road races in the Italian Alps. Every year, on the last weekend of May, it connects two iconic locations in the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites: Cortina d'Ampezzo (in the province of Belluno, Veneto) and Dobbiaco/Toblach (in the province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol). The 30-kilometre course winds along the bed of the former Dolomite railway, decommissioned in the 1960s and now transformed into a spectacular cycle and pedestrian path.
The start is at Corso Italia, in the heart of Cortina d'Ampezzo. After the first few kilometres, the track joins the former railway: a dirt path with a gentle but constant incline, passing through the characteristic tunnels and bridges suspended over the void typical of this historic line. You climb up to the 1530-metre Passo Cima Banche, a natural watershed between the provinces of Belluno and Bolzano, with views of the Val di Landro and the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Lake Dobbiaco then signals the approach to the finish line, set up in the Grand Hotel Park of Dobbiaco.
The event is much more than just the main Sunday race. On Saturday, the Green Village set up in the Grand Hotel park brings Dobbiaco to life with non-competitive races for children and teenagers, charity events, and the Spring Night Run, the evocative 11 km evening race that starts at nightfall from the Tre Cime di Lavaredo viewpoint, with participants equipped with headlamps. Every year, thousands of athletes, family members, and spectators gather around the race.
The organization, managed by the A.S.D. F.O.R. Foundation Organization Running led by Gianni Poli, has made the "three S's" its banner: sport, solidarity, and sustainability. The race is part of the national FIDAL calendar and allocates part of its proceeds to charitable initiatives in the Ampezzo and South Tyrolean areas.
The 26th edition of the Cortina Dobbiaco Run is scheduled for Sunday, 31 May 2026. The start of the main 30 km event is set for the morning from Corso Italia, in Cortina d'Ampezzo, with the finish at the Grand Hotel Park in Dobbiaco. About 2,800 runners are expected, with a maximum cap of 2,500 registered for the 30 km race.
On Saturday, 30 May, the Green Village in the Grand Hotel park in Dobbiaco is open from 9:00 to 18:30. In the morning, there are non-competitive races for children and teenagers; in the afternoon, charity events, including the Animal Hero Run and the Run For, a seven-kilometre race around Lake Dobbiaco to support local associations.
In the evening, the Spring Night Run, the 11 km race that starts at 20:45 from the Tre Cime di Lavaredo viewpoint and arrives at the Grand Hotel Park in Dobbiaco. A headlamp is mandatory; a shuttle departs from the park towards the starting point.
The detailed program with final times is published on the official website.
Dobbiaco/Toblach can be reached by car via the SS49 Pusteria road; by train via the Val Pusteria line (Dobbiaco station). Cortina d'Ampezzo, the starting point, is about 30 km away and is connected by bus.
The registration fee for the 30 km race starts at €40 and increases as the race approaches, up to €60 (registration closes on 27 May 2026, with a maximum cap of 2,500 participants). Bib collection is on Friday and Saturday afternoon at the Green Village in Dobbiaco.
Bring suitable mountain clothing (temperatures at 1500 m can be cool). A headlamp is mandatory for the evening Spring Night Run. Book your accommodation in Dobbiaco or Cortina well in advance, as it is in high demand during the race weekend.
