The sunset race through the alleys and countryside of the Alta Tuscia in Viterbo
Corri Onano is a young yet already highly popular running event, established in 2025 by the Municipality of Onano and the Pro Loco Association of Onano, in the province of Viterbo, in northern Lazio. The concept is simple and successful: using running as a tool for tourism promotion in a village of just a few hundred inhabitants, nestled between Lake Bolsena and the Tuscan border, in that part of Alta Tuscia defined by tuff, oak forests, and white gravel roads. Since its first edition, the event has brought hundreds of runners from all over Lazio and neighboring regions to Onano, transforming Piazza Umberto I into a small sports village for an evening.
The track measures approximately 9.9 kilometers and is mixed-terrain. The start is in the heart of the town, with an initial stretch through the village streets that treats competitors to direct encouragement from residents leaning out of their doorways. After the first few kilometers, the loop leaves the town, and around the 4.5 km mark, it enters a dirt road of about 3 kilometersโthe most scenic and challenging part of the race: here, the landscape opens up to cultivated fields and the volcanic hills of the area. The final sector leads athletes back toward Onano and the finish line, back in the square. A water station is provided along the dirt section, while a full refreshment area awaits everyone at the finish line.
The festival's format includes three participation modes, designed to ensure no one is left out:
One of the organizers' smartest choices is the timing: the start is set for the late afternoon, when the heat of late June has subsided and the grazing light illuminates the tuff of the houses. The result is a race that glides toward sunset and concludes in a festive atmosphere, complete with awards, refreshments, and the conviviality typical of the village festivals in Tuscia. Participants are guaranteed a race pack, finisher medal, changing rooms, showers, bag storage, and a photo service.
Onano is one of the northernmost municipalities in the province of Viterbo, overlooking the border with Tuscany and the plateau that slopes down toward Lake Bolsena. The village is known for its Onano lentil, a local gastronomic specialty celebrated by a summer festival, and for a medieval historic center gathered around Palazzo Monaldeschi. Running here means crossing a territory little touched by mass tourism, where agricultural vocation and historical heritage coexist. It is no coincidence that the 2026 edition was inaugurated by the Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli, a sign of institutional attention toward projects for the revitalization of small villages in Lazio.
Technical organization is entrusted to ACSI Italia Atletica together with A.S.D. Podistica Primavalle Rome, a historic Roman club, with coordination by the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Onano. Timing and ranking management are handled by a professional service, ensuring the regularity of the competitive race.
After its 2025 debut, Corri Onano confirmed its format by moving the race to Saturday evening. The meeting point was set for 4:30 PM in Piazza Umberto I, the heart of the village of Onano, in the province of Viterbo, with the start of the competitive and non-competitive race at 6:30 PM and the walk at 6:35 PM.
The route, the same for all events, measured approximately 9.9 kilometers on mixed terrain: an initial stretch inside the village, exiting toward the countryside, and, from about the 4.5 km mark, a dirt sector of about 3 kilometers before returning to Onano. Water station along the track and full refreshment at the finish line.
The event was inaugurated by the Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli, who was present at the start, highlighting the value of the village's tourism promotion project supported by the municipal administration together with the Pro Loco.
Registration for the races closed on Wednesday, June 24, at 10:00 PM; for the walk, it was possible to register until 12:00 PM on Saturday, June 27. Online registration on corrionano.it.
