About Bolsena Permaculture

After a decade-long hiatus, the Permaculture Festival returns to Bolsena from September 11th to 13th, 2026, with three days dedicated to ecological regeneration, participatory design, and building resilient communities. Conceived by local architect Luca Puri and promoted by the Italian Permaculture Academy, the event brings the historic center overlooking Europe's largest volcanic lake to life with workshops, conferences, art exhibitions, music, and collective installations open to all ages.

The return of the Permaculture Festival to Bolsena

After a hiatus of about ten years, the Permaculture Festival returns to animate Bolsena, on the northeastern shore of the lake of the same name, in the province of Viterbo (Lazio). From September 11th to 13th, 2026, the village overlooking Europe's largest volcanic lake will host three days dedicated to ecological regeneration, participatory design, and the construction of resilient communities. The event, which began in the 2010s as one of Italy's premier sustainability gatherings, resumes its journey thanks to its creator and curator Luca Puri, a Bolsena-based architect, and the support of the Italian Permaculture Academy.

A program blending practical knowledge and culture

The heart of the festival is the sharing of concrete knowledge for sustainable living in the region. The 2026 edition features a rich program including:

  • 16 practical workshops on permaculture, ecological design, and landscape care;
  • 12 meetings with experts, mentors, and new talents from the Italian permaculture community;
  • 6 thematic conferences on environmental regeneration;
  • live music, art exhibitions, and numerous informal exchange opportunities.

The festival is held entirely in Italian and is primarily aimed at the national permaculture community, while enthusiastically welcoming guests and curious visitors from everywhere.

Participatory art: Forunion and Forelements

Alongside education, the festival gives ample space to collective art. The Forunion project involves the creative reuse of over one thousand used t-shirts, transformed into artistic interpretations of the event's logo. The Forelements project brings to life an installation featuring sixteen flags made from recycled fabrics, inspired by the four elements: water, air, earth, and fire. The artistic journey, which involves children, the elderly, people with disabilities, schools, and local embroiderers, culminates on Sunday, September 13th, with a public performance featuring flag-wavers. Among the key figures of this edition is the EcoSocial Artist Luca Gnizio.

Bolsena and its lake

The Municipality of Bolsena, famous for its Eucharistic miracle and its medieval historic center dominated by the Rocca Monaldeschi, offers an ideal setting for a festival that weaves together nature, culture, and community. The town's squaresโ€”from Piazza Matteotti to Piazza Dante Alighieriโ€”and a charming historic palace become open-air laboratories for three days, in dialogue with the lake and the vineyards and olive groves of the Tuscia Viterbese region.

A festival for the community

More than just a review, the Bolsena Permaculture Festival is a participatory process: citizens, artists, farmers, and visitors build an experience together that aims to leave lasting traces on the territory. It is an opportunity to discover practices of self-production, synergistic horticulture, green building, and low-impact lifestyles, immersed in the beauty of northern Lazio.
