Two months of music, open-air cinema, and lively evenings in the heart of the Tuscia Viterbese
Piansano Summer, also known as Estate Piansanese, is the summer event series promoted by the Municipality of Piansano, a small agricultural village in the Province of Viterbo, northern Lazio. From July to August, the village comes alive every week with open-air performances, film screenings, live bands, and social evenings that bring together all generations, from children to the elderly sitting on chairs brought from home.
Piansano has just over two thousand inhabitants and thrives on agriculture, olive oil, and wine: here, the festival is not a manufactured tourist product, but a natural extension of community life. Evenings take place in the historic center's squares—particularly Piazza Lucia Burlini and the streets around the tower—and in the gardens of the Sports Hall, which host the most popular events. Admission is traditionally free, and the atmosphere remains that of a village feast: informal and welcoming.
In recent years, the most anticipated moment of the festival has become the Piansano Open Air, four days of live music and street food in the Sports Hall gardens, with free entry. The first edition in August 2025 brought tribute bands dedicated to Pinguini Tattici Nucleari and Vasco Rossi, 90s DJ sets, and a vast food area to the village: a formula that expanded the audience well beyond the municipal borders.
As in many villages of the Tuscia region, summer is when the town repopulates: those who emigrated return, families reunite, and associations get to work. Piansano Summer is the backdrop for this collective homecoming and intertwines with other annual events, from the Maternum Marathon in June to winter religious feasts. For visitors, it is also an opportunity to discover a less-traveled corner of Lazio, just a few kilometers from Lake Bolsena and the towns of Tuscania, Montefiascone, and Valentano.
Those looking for a large, structured festival will find what they want elsewhere. However, those who want to understand how summer is truly experienced in a village of the Viterbo countryside—between an outdoor movie, a concert in the square, and a pizza eaten at a plastic table under the fairy lights—will find an authentic, nearly cost-free experience in Piansano.
The Municipality of Piansano officially kicked off the 2026 summer season with an announcement published on July 9, 2026. As per tradition, the festival is spread across July and August, alternating shows, live music, cinema, and culinary moments in the squares and open spaces of the village, in the heart of the Tuscia Viterbese.
The calendar is published in successive appointments: for now, the open-air screening of «Cinema under the tower» is confirmed, scheduled for Thursday, July 16, 2026, at 9:30 PM on Via Umberto I. Further evenings—concerts, cabaret, and family initiatives—are expected in the following weeks, with the usual peak in the second half of August.
Access to the municipal program events is free. For updated dates, it is best to follow the official communications of the Municipality or call the municipal offices.
Piansano can be reached by car from the Cassia (SS2) road by exiting towards Montefiascone and Valentano, or from the Aurelia (SS1) via Tuscania. Approximate distances: Viterbo about 40 km, Rome about 110 km, Lake Bolsena about 15 km. The most convenient train station is Viterbo, which is connected to Rome; from there, you can continue by regional bus or rental car.
Events in the municipal summer program are generally free of charge. Only food and drink at the stalls are paid.
Accommodation in the village is limited: it is best to look for farm stays (agriturismi) and bed and breakfasts in the area of Valentano, Tuscania, Marta, and Capodimonte, near Lake Bolsena.
Evenings are held outdoors: bring a light jacket because the temperature can drop after midnight. The detailed program is released periodically by the Municipality through its official information channels; for information, call +39 0761 450832.
