About Latera Summer

Latera Summer is the seasonal festival that brings life to Latera, a small village in the Alta Tuscia region of Viterbo province, from late June through the end of August. Promoted by the local municipality in partnership with the Pro Loco and local associations, it features a blend of concerts, theatrical performances, open-air cinema, gastronomic evenings, and historical memory events. For two months, the squares and narrow alleys of the historic center become a natural stage for a free program accessible to everyone.

Two months of events in the heart of Alta Tuscia

The Latera Summer Festival is not just a one-night event, but a widespread calendar that accompanies Latera throughout the beautiful season. The municipality, in collaboration with the Pro Loco and local associations, gathers in a single program the events that animate the village from the summer solstice until the end of August: live music, theatre, film screenings, cultural meetings, social gatherings, and traditional feasts. It is the typical formula of the small towns in the province of Viterbo, where summer coincides with the return of those who emigrated and the revival of life in the town square.

Latera, a village that tells its story

Nestled on the western slopes of the Volsini mountains, a short distance from Lake Bolsena, Latera is a medieval village that preserves the narrow, shaded layout of its alleys and the memory of the Farnese ducal palace. The town has only a few hundred inhabitants, but it boasts a surprisingly vibrant cultural life: in recent years, the Latera The Art Farm project has brought Italian and international artists to work in the workshops of the historic center, leaving behind permanent works and installations. The Latera Summer Festival also captures this energy and shares it with residents and visitors alike.

What to expect in the program

  • Concerts and live music in the square, ranging from cover bands to local groups, often continuing late into the night.
  • Theatre and storytelling, with open-air shows designed for an intergenerational audience.
  • Cinema under the stars, with evening screenings in the village's public spaces.
  • Memory and culture events, such as evenings dedicated to war memories collected from the village elders.
  • Gastronomic moments linked to local products, primarily the Sagra del Pizzicotto in July, dedicated to hand-pinched pasta.
  • Sunrise concerts and initiatives in scenic spots, taking advantage of the village's position overlooking the Volsini countryside.

A village-scale summer

Those arriving in Latera for the first time will not find massive stages or large facilities: the Latera Summer Festival thrives on proximity. Shows are held in Piazza Rocca and the small squares of the center, the audience sits on chairs brought from home, associations manage the food stands, and children roam freely until late at night. It is a concept of celebration that still endures in Tuscia and which represents, for many visitors, the true reason for the trip.

Why visit

The Latera Summer Festival is perfect to combine with a day at Lake Bolsena or an itinerary through the Volsini villages — Valentano, Gradoli, Grotte di Castro, and Onano. Almost all events have free admission, making the festival a natural choice for families and those traveling on a budget. Those looking for a longer immersion can take advantage of the area's agritourism facilities, which are numerous and reasonably priced compared to the more crowded lakeside resorts of northern Lazio.

A program that changes every year

The program is defined and released close to the start of the festival, usually between late May and early June, through the Latera Municipality website, the Gruppo Pro Loco Latera Facebook page, and posters displayed in the village. Those planning their visit in advance should check the dates of individual events, as they may be subject to changes in case of bad weather.

Latera Summer — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Latera Summer Festival runs from June 20 to August 29, with a program presented by the Municipality of Latera at the end of May. Over two months of events including live music, theatre, cinema, cultural meetings, and traditional feasts, spread across the squares and alleys of the historic center. The events are largely free of charge and involve the Pro Loco and local associations.

Latera Summer Festival 2026

The 2026 program covers the entire summer period, from June 20 to August 29. The Municipality of Latera officially announced it on May 26, 2026, confirming the now-consolidated formula: music, theatre, cinema, and culture distributed over about ten weeks of programming in the village's historic center.

Among the events already announced are the evenings dedicated to War Memories, moments of collective remembrance built on the testimonies of Latera's elders, scheduled for the second half of June. In July, one of the most evocative moments of the summer is planned: the sunrise concert by the Pierotti Olivieri Duo, which symbolically opens the village's musical season. Also in July, the Sagra del Pizzicotto returns, dedicated to the village's typical hand-made pasta. The historic center also hosts the residency of Canadian artists Polimetys, working on a new symbolic work for Latera as part of the Latera The Art Farm project.

The complete calendar, with times and locations for individual events, is released through the Latera Municipality website and the Gruppo Pro Loco Latera Facebook page; some dates may be updated during the season.
