The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ in the heart of the Aeolian Islands
The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, known as Corpus Domini, is one of the most significant dates in the religious calendar of Lipari, the main hub of the Aeolian Islands archipelago in the province of Messina, Sicily. The highlight is the solemn Eucharistic procession that, at sunset, traverses the island's historic center, turning the town's streets into a path of faith and tradition.
The heart of the celebration is the Cathedral (Co-cathedral) of San Bartolomeo, built on the ancient acropolis of the Lipari Castle and dedicated to the island's patron saint. The procession departs from here, under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela. The Blessed Sacrament, enclosed in a monstrance and carried under a canopy, is exposed for public adoration and accompanied through the streets by the island's priests, the historic Confraternities of Lipari, and the faithful.
The religious pageant follows a route touching the main arteries of the center: from the Cathedral, it winds along Via del Concordato, Via Garibaldi, Via XXIV Maggio, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and Via Maurolico, before returning to Via Garibaldi, passing through Piazza Marina Corta (Piazza Ugo Sant'Onofrio), and concluding at the Church of San Giuseppe. Along the way, the confraternities in traditional attire and children scattering flower petals create a deeply evocative scene.
Among the elements enriching the festival is the flower carpet (infiorata) on Salita San Giuseppe: the procession route is recreated with artistic designs made from coarse colored salt. The work, curated by Father Bartolo Saltalamacchia together with catechists and parishioners, is composed on the eve of the event, with work continuing under the sun by day and into the night, transforming the slope into a striking open-air carpet of sacred art.
More than just a liturgical appointment, Corpus Domini is an occasion for the Lipari community to express a strong collective identity, renewing an ancient bond between the island, its cathedral, and its patron saint, San Bartolomeo. It is an authentic experience for those visiting the Aeolian Islands at the start of summer who wish to discover the most devout and traditional side of island culture.
The 2026 edition of Corpus Domini in Lipari took place on Sunday, June 7, 2026. At 6:30 PM, a solemn pontifical mass was celebrated in the Cathedral of San Bartolomeo, presided over by H.E. Rev. Msgr. Cesare Di Pietro and concelebrated by the island's priests.
Following the mass, around 7:30 PM, the traditional Eucharistic procession began, with the participation of the historic Confraternities of Lipari and children scattering flowers along the streets of the center. The procession departed from the Cathedral, traversed Via del Concordato, Via Garibaldi, Via XXIV Maggio, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and Via Maurolico, passed through Piazza Marina Corta, and concluded at the Church of San Giuseppe.
Among this year's highlights, the Salita San Giuseppe was decorated with a flower carpet of coarse colored salt reproducing the procession route, created by Father Bartolo Saltalamacchia with catechists and parishioners.
