The great pilgrimage to the Black Madonna, one of the most heartfelt traditions in all of Sicily
Perched on the ancient Greek acropolis, overlooking the sea and the famous Marinello lakes, the Basilica Sanctuary of Maria SS. del Tindari is one of the most evocative places of worship in all of Sicily. It is located in the hamlet of Tindari, in the municipality of Patti, in the province of Messina. Here, every year on September 7th and 8th, the Feast of the Madonna del Tindari is celebrated, an event that draws thousands of faithful and pilgrims from across the region and the rest of Italy.
The heart of the devotion is the Black Madonna, a wooden statue carved from cedar, depicted with an oriental-style crown, seated with the Child whose right hand is raised in blessing. According to tradition, the sacred image arrived in Tindari by sea around the 8th-9th century, saved from the iconoclastic persecution in the East: the ship carrying it found shelter from a storm on the beach of Marinello and could not depart until the statue was left on land. Since then, the Madonna has been venerated in this place, where first a small church and then the current basilica were built.
The festival is preceded by a long novena that begins at the end of August, with evening celebrations animated by the parishes and communities of the Diocese of Patti. The most moving moment is the evening of September 7th, when the statue of the Madonna is carried in procession among the crowd gathered in prayer, before the fireworks display. The following day, September 8th, the festival culminates with the solemn Pontifical Mass presided over by the Bishop of Patti and the offering of the votive lamp that will burn before the image of the Madonna throughout the year.
It is not just a liturgical event: the festival is part of the identity of Patti and the municipalities of the Nebrodi mountains and the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina. Many pilgrims reach the sanctuary on foot, some barefoot, fulfilling vows and bringing offerings. The pilgrimage to Tindari, also mentioned by Salvatore Quasimodo in his verses, unites spirituality, landscape, and popular tradition in one of the most intense chapters of the Sicilian religious calendar.
In 2026, the Feast of the Madonna del Tindari once again draws thousands of pilgrims to Patti on September 7th and 8th. The festival is preceded by the novena, which begins in late August with evening celebrations, and reaches its peak with the procession of the statue and the Pontifical Mass presided over by the Bishop of Patti, during which the votive lamp is offered.
