The Corpus Domini floral carpet in the castle village
Every year, for the solemnity of Corpus Domini, the Municipality of Roccascalegna, in the province of Chieti, celebrates one of the most evocative religious and artistic traditions of inland Abruzzo: the Infiorata (Flower Festival). The streets and squares of the medieval village are adorned with a long, multicolored carpet of flowers, upon which the Blessed Sacrament is carried in procession. For an entire day, the town fills with colors and fragrances, while the imposing Roccascalegna Castle, perched on a rocky spur dominating the valley, frames a unique atmosphere.
The carpet is created entirely by hand using fresh flowers, petals, and colored wood shavings. With these simple, natural materials, the artisans compose sacred images, religious symbols, and striking designs that wind through the main streets and squares of the historic center. Each composition is the result of patient, collective work: ephemeral masterpieces meant to last only a few hours, yet capable of leaving a lasting impression on visitors. It is a fragile, communal art form that renews the inhabitants' bond with their roots and faith each year.
The spiritual heart of the event is the Eucharistic procession, which traverses the village, walking over the floral carpet. According to local tradition, the first to step onto the noble floral path is the parish priest, who emerges from the church carrying the Blessed Sacrament in a solemn procession. The entire community gathers around this act, in a blend of devotion, folk art, and a sense of belonging that makes the Roccascalegna Flower Festival a deeply felt occasion.
Roccascalegna is a picturesque village nestled among the wild valleys of Abruzzo, famous above all for its medieval castle, built starting in the 11th century by the Lombards for defensive purposes. Its medieval tower overlooks the entire valley, offering a spectacular view toward the Majella massif. Visiting Roccascalegna on the day of the Infiorata means combining the discovery of one of Abruzzo's most photographed fortresses with the emotion of an ancient rite, amidst alleys decorated with flowers.
The Corpus Domini Flower Festival represents a moment of strong popular participation for Roccascalegna and the Sangro-Aventino area, where faith, art, and community intertwine. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover an inland Abruzzo village and witness an event that, amidst the scent of flowers and devotion, colors the streets of the historic center with sacred beauty in the shadow of the castle.
The 2026 edition of the Roccascalegna Corpus Domini Flower Festival was held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. For an entire day, the medieval village, between squares and alleys, was filled with colors and scents. The main streets and squares of the historic center were transformed into a large carpet of sacred and evocative images, created with flowers, petals, and colored wood shavings, giving life to an artistic path in the shadow of the famous Roccascalegna Castle. The floral carpet was followed by the solemn Eucharistic procession of Corpus Domini along the streets of the town.
Roccascalegna is located in the hinterland of the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo, in the Sangro-Aventino area. By car, it can be reached from the A14 motorway (Val di Sangro exit) or the A25, continuing along the valley roads. The nearest train stations are in the Lanciano and Val di Sangro area, which are then connected by local buses.
The event takes place in the streets and squares of the medieval village, generally from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and is free and open to the public.
To admire the floral carpet intact, it is best to arrive in the early part of the day, before the procession. Comfortable clothing and footwear are recommended for walking through the uphill historic center; do not miss a visit to the Roccascalegna Castle that dominates the village.
