Floral carpets and ancient processions in the heart of the Madonie
The Corpus Domini Flower Festival is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Petralia Sottana, a village perched in the heart of the Madonie Park, in the province of Palermo. Each year, coinciding with the feast of Corpus Domini, the historic center undergoes a transformation: the characteristic squares and picturesque alleys become the canvas for large artistic compositions created on the ground, a mosaic of colors that invites residents and visitors to stroll through a blend of faith and beauty.
These works are not crafted from flowers alone. Local artists use a wide range of materials to bring their figures to life: salt, earth, sand, and flower petals, complemented by rice, pigments, glue, and drawing paper to define the finest details. The result is a series of vibrant depictions reproducing sacred images, local artistic works, and moments of Petralia's popular tradition linked to the cult of the Blessed Sacrament. Altars and decorative displays are set up in front of churches, and the churchyards are enriched with floral carpets that frame the rites.
The heart of the event is the Corpus Domini procession, which traverses the village, passing over and alongside the floral displays. All the ancient local brotherhoods and congregations participate in their historical vestments: the monstrance is kept under a rich white processional canopy with gold embroidery, carried by the brothers of the Blessed Sacrament. It is a deeply moving moment where the ephemeral art of flowers dialogues with the solemnity of ancient religious rituals.
Born from the vision and creative flair of some of the town's youth, the Flower Festival has become a permanent fixture over time and a true occasion for the entire community of Petralia Sottana to come together. Families, associations, and brotherhoods collaborate on the preparation of the carpets in a festive atmosphere that precedes and accompanies the celebrations. Today, the event is also a significant tourist attraction, capable of highlighting the historical and artistic context of this Madonie village.
Included among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club, the municipality of Petralia Sottana preserves a heritage of churches, palaces, and alleys that serves as the ideal backdrop for the Flower Festival. Visiting the town during the days of Corpus Domini means discovering the most authentic inland Sicily, amidst folk art, devotion, and the landscapes of the Madonie Park.
The 2026 edition of the Corpus Domini Flower Festival was held in Petralia Sottana in conjunction with the solemnity of Corpus Domini, celebrated in Italy on Sunday, June 7, 2026. As per tradition, floral carpets decorated the squares and alleys of the historic center of the Madonie village, featuring sacred figures and motifs of popular tradition composed of salt, earth, sand, and petals. The day concluded with the procession of the Blessed Sacrament, accompanied by the ancient local brotherhoods in historical vestments.
Petralia Sottana can be reached by car from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, taking the Tremonzelli exit and continuing along the SS120 towards the Madonie. From Palermo, the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The Flower Festival takes place in conjunction with the solemnity of Corpus Domini (June). The procession is generally held in the evening.
Access to the floral displays and the procession is free and open to the public.
We recommend arriving in the afternoon to admire the creation of the carpets and wearing comfortable shoes to navigate the sloping alleys of the historic center.
