About Monte Compatri Flower Festival

Every year, on the Sunday of Corpus Domini, Monte Compatri wakes at dawn to transform Piazza Marco Mastrofini into a vast carpet of petals. Volunteers from the Borgo Ghetto association, joined by citizens who spend the preceding days gathering flowers, create ephemeral floral artworks that the solemn procession crosses at midday. A popular and devotional tradition that unites generations in one of the most charming villages of the Castelli Romani.

A carpet of petals in the historic center

The Corpus Domini Flower Festival is the annual event that, at the start of summer, draws the entire town to the heart of Monte Compatri, a village in the Castelli Romani area near Rome, in the Lazio region. During the night and early morning of Corpus Domini Sunday, Piazza Marco Mastrofini is entirely covered in petals, leaves, seeds, and colored sawdust: this creates a floral path that the procession will cross just hours later, before being swept away by the passage of the faithful and the wind. It is this ephemeral beauty that gives meaning to all the hard work.

Who creates it

The Flower Festival is organized by the Montecompatri Borgo Ghetto Association, in collaboration with the Parish and with the support of the Monte Compatri municipal administration. Volunteers spend weeks designing the patterns and, in the days immediately preceding, seek the collaboration of the entire community in gathering flowers, which are brought to the square on the morning of the setup. It is a collective open-air workshop where elderly guardians of tradition, families, and young people trying their hand at the technique of the 'infiorata' work side by side.

The day of Corpus Domini

The morning is dedicated to composing the quadri (floral paintings): each panel has a theme, often religiously inspired or linked to current events in the Church and the community. Once the setup is complete, Holy Mass is celebrated in the Duomo, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta that overlooks the village; immediately after, the solemn Corpus Domini procession begins, descending into the square onto the flower carpet and continuing along the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the Compatrum Folkloristic Musical Corps.

Why it's worth the trip

  • It is one of the most meticulously crafted flower festivals in the Castelli Romani, made entirely by hand and on a non-profit basis.
  • It takes place in a compact medieval historic center, with views and panoramas stretching as far as the Roman countryside.
  • Admission is free: no tickets or reservations are required.
  • It is an opportunity to see a town in the Alban Hills in its most authentic dimension, far from mass tourism circuits.

Monte Compatri and the Castelli Romani

Perched at an altitude of over 500 meters in the Alban Hills, Monte Compatri is part of the Castelli Romani system, the ring of villages southeast of Rome famous for its wine, 'fraschette' taverns, and popular festivals. The town retains a concentric urban layout, steep alleys, and overlooks of the valley; the 18th-century Duomo and the Ghetto district, which gives its name to the promoting association, are its defining landmarks. Visiting the village on the day of the Flower Festival means seeing it at its best, with houses decorated and streets closed to traffic.

A ritual that renews itself

Born in the 2010s through the initiative of a group of residents from the district, the Monte Compatri Flower Festival has grown edition after edition to become one of the most anticipated events on the city calendar. The mayor and the administration highlight it every year as an example of collective participation: an event that requires no large budget because its capital is the hands of the volunteers and the flowers gathered in the town's gardens.

Monte Compatri Flower Festival — edition 2026

The eleventh edition of the Corpus Domini Flower Festival took place on Sunday, June 7, 2026, in Monte Compatri. Volunteers from the Borgo Ghetto association set up the floral paintings in Piazza Marco Mastrofini at dawn; after the 10:30 AM Holy Mass in the Duomo, the solemn Corpus Domini procession began at 11:30 AM, accompanied by the Compatrum Folkloristic Musical Corps along the streets of the historic center.

2026 Flower Festival: the eleventh edition

On Sunday, June 7, 2026, Monte Compatri celebrated Corpus Domini with the eleventh edition of its Flower Festival. From the early hours of the morning, volunteers from the Montecompatri Borgo Ghetto Association, together with citizens who had collaborated in gathering the flowers, composed the floral paintings that covered Piazza Marco Mastrofini.

One of the panels of the 2026 edition was dedicated to the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas by Pope Leo XIV on the protection of human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence, confirming the association's habit of linking the designs to current events in the Church.

At 10:30 AM, Holy Mass was celebrated in the Duomo; at 11:30 AM, the solemn Corpus Domini procession set off from the cathedral, crossing the flower carpet and the streets of the historic center accompanied by the Compatrum Folkloristic Musical Corps. This year, the usual 11:30 AM Mass at San Michele was not held.

The event was attended by Mayor Francesco Ferri and representatives of the municipal administration, with the support of the Local Police, the Civil Protection Beta 91 O.D.V., and the National Carabinieri Association of Monte Compatri.
