A neighborhood festival in the heart of Appio Claudio

The Patronal Feast of Saint Ignatius of Antioch is the most anticipated event of the year for the Statuario area, located at the gates of the Appio Claudio district in Rome's 7th Municipality (Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Lazio). Every October, the parish on Via Squillace, just steps from Via Appia Nuova and the Appian Way Regional Park, transforms the liturgical commemoration of its patron into a choral event involving families, parish groups, religious orders, and residents of a neighborhood that grew from an agricultural periphery into a fully-fledged district after the Second World War.

Saint Ignatius, the martyr who came to Rome

Saint Ignatius of Antioch, bishop of the Syrian city and a disciple of the first Christian generation, was brought to Rome at the beginning of the 2nd century to suffer martyrdom. The Church commemorates him on October 17th, which is why the Statuario community, which bears his name, celebrates its solemnity on that date. The letters Ignatius wrote during his journey to Rome—some of the oldest texts in Christian literature—remain the guiding thread of the catechesis that accompanies every edition of the festival.

The Ignatian triduum

The festival is not limited to a single day. In the three preceding days, from October 14th to 16th, the Ignatian triduum takes place: each evening features a Eucharistic celebration animated in turn by the religious communities present in the area, followed by a catechesis or meditation entrusted to a guest preacher. Over the years, bishops, professors from the Pontifical Lateran University, and religious figures have taken turns, covering themes ranging from the Eucharist to the action of the Holy Spirit in the life of the community. It is the most reflective moment of the festival, giving it depth beyond a simple calendar event.

The solemnity of October 17th

The patronal day is marked by a High Mass and a procession with the relic of Saint Ignatius, housed in a reliquary from the Church of the Gesù, which winds through the neighborhood streets accompanied by the faithful. Often, the celebration coincides with the conferral of Confirmation to the parish's adolescents, a detail that makes the day particularly significant for Statuario families. The evening traditionally concludes with a social gathering organized by the parish club.

The church and its heritage

The parish was established in 1952; the church, designed by architect Tullio Rossi, was completed in 1957 and consecrated on October 12th of that year. The brick building, in a neo-Romanesque style with a bell tower and longitudinal plan, houses several notable works: the apse mosaic featuring the Virgin Enthroned by Gilda Nagni and Franco D'Urso, the Stations of the Cross by Alessandro Monteleone, and the bronze crucifix by Francesco Nagni on the high altar. Visiting during the festival is also an opportunity to discover a well-preserved example of Roman sacred architecture from the 1950s.
