A neighborhood festival at the gates of Rome

The Saint Michael the Archangel Festival is the patronal feast of Giardini di Corcolle, a neighborhood on the far eastern outskirts of Rome, within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital (Lazio), bordering Tivoli and the Roman countryside. It is celebrated in late September, around the 29th, the day the Church honors Archangel Michael, and is organized by the Via Monteprandone parish alongside local volunteers and neighborhood associations.

From a small settlement to a parish: a recent history

Corcolle is a young community. In the 1970s, only a few hundred people lived here; the parish community was founded in 1975 and for years gathered in a multipurpose hall used as a temporary church. It was not until October 5, 1997, that Bishop Pietro Garlato inaugurated and dedicated the new church to Saint Michael the Archangel. Today, the area has nearly fifteen thousand inhabitants, and the parish, part of the Diocese of Tivoli and Palestrina, remains the neighborhood's primary hub. In this sense, the patronal feast is much more than a religious recurrence: it is the moment when a rapidly grown neighborhood recognizes itself as a community.

What to expect during the festival

The program balances devotional and popular elements, following the classic tradition of Roman and Lazio patronal feasts:

• Liturgical celebrations in the days leading up to September 29, with a triduum in preparation for the Archangel's solemnity;
• Solemn Mass on the day of Saint Michael, the religious heart of the festival;
• Procession with the statue of the saint through the streets of Giardini di Corcolle, accompanied by a marching band and local families;
• Evening events in the square with live music, dance groups, and shows open to everyone;
• Games and activities for children, inflatables, and entertainment in the parish grounds;
• Food stalls run by volunteers, featuring Roman cuisine and local products.

A village identity within the city

Visitors arriving in Corcolle from the center of Rome immediately notice the different scale: residential streets, wide horizons toward the Prenestini Mountains and the Alban Hills, and a social fabric where people know each other. The September festival amplifies this dimension. Plastic chairs in front of the church, the scent of the grills, and teenagers occupying the parish sports field: it is a snapshot of a suburb that, for a few days, acts like a provincial village. For the curious visitor, it is a rare chance to see a non-touristy side of Rome—the side of the neighborhoods that still preserves living collective rituals.

Devotion to Saint Michael in Lazio

The cult of Archangel Michael is among the oldest and most widespread in Italy and has left deep traces in Lazio, from rock-hewn churches to the patronages of numerous towns in the Roman province and the Aniene Valley. Michael, the leader of the heavenly hosts depicted with a sword and scales, is traditionally invoked as a protector against evil and a guide for souls: a figure that lends itself well to popular devotion, consisting of votive offerings, images carried in processions, and promises kept year after year. In Corcolle, this devotion has taken root in a new community, becoming a foundational element of its identity in just a few decades.

When to go

The event is held consistently in the final days of September, between the end of the Roman summer and the beginning of autumn: evenings are still mild, ideal for outdoor activities. In 2025, the festival took place from September 24 to 28. Dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced; it is best to follow the parish channels in the weeks leading up to the September 29th feast day.
