Petal carpets in the historic center for Corpus Domini
In the heart of the Teramo province, the small village of Castilenti celebrates one of Abruzzo's most evocative traditions every year: the Corpus Domini Flower Festival. For the solemnity of Corpus Domini, which falls on the Sunday after the Most Holy Trinity, the streets of the historic center are adorned with vibrant colors thanks to the hand-crafted floral carpets created by local volunteers.
The initiative, promoted by the Castilenti in Fiore association, involves dozens of passionate floral artists who work together to compose large, ephemeral tableaux along the main street of the village. It is an event that weaves together art, faith, creativity, and a sense of belonging to a community that gathers every year around this ancient custom.
In the Teramo area, the floral artists of Castilenti primarily use roses, carnations, and broom flowers, along with leaves, seeds, and other natural elements, to shape designs that depict sacred and figurative themes. The petals are collected, selected, and carefully laid on the pavement, transforming the street into a fragrant mosaic that remains visible for only a few hours—the time it takes for the procession to pass.
It is precisely this ephemeral nature that makes the Flower Festival so precious: a collective work built over days of labor and destined to last only as long as the celebration itself. In Castilenti, dreams made of petals, colors, and hands working with love come back to life every year.
The Castilenti Flower Festival is part of a broader movement that is rediscovering the tradition of Corpus Domini flower festivals across Abruzzo, village by village. Along with other locations in the Teramo area, the town helps keep alive a practice that unites spirituality, folk art, and a love for the local territory.
In the Municipality of Castilenti, in the province of Teramo, the event attracts visitors and curious onlookers every year who slowly walk along the flowered path, admiring the work of the volunteer artists. It is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the rolling hills of Abruzzo and to experience one of its most genuine expressions of popular religiosity and shared creativity up close.
In 2026, Castilenti blossomed once again for the thirteenth time. The Corpus Domini Flower Festival took place on Sunday, June 7, 2026, coinciding with the liturgical solemnity.
In the days leading up to the event, volunteer floral artists prepared and composed the floral carpets along the historic center's street, using roses, carnations, broom flowers, and other natural elements. The flowered path accompanied the Corpus Domini procession, offering visitors the usual setting of colors and scents.
