Eleven evenings of Eucharistic processions among the autàr of Valguarnera Caropepe
The Corpus Domini Festival in Valguarnera Caropepe, a small town in the province of Enna in the heart of Sicily, is considered one of the island's most extraordinary Eucharistic celebrations. Its uniqueness lies in its duration: while almost everywhere else the Corpus Domini is celebrated in a single procession, in Valguarnera the solemnity extends over eleven consecutive evenings, during which the Blessed Sacrament travels along different routes each night, reaching every corner of the town.
The evenings are known by the locals as "sir' rù Signur" (the Lord's evenings). Along the routes, families and neighbors set up autàr, votive altars erected at street corners and decorated with flowers, ornamental plants, and embroidered fabrics. The streets are dressed for the occasion: balconies are draped with white linens from which, as the monstrance passes, rose petals and broom flowers are showered. The Sacrament moves forward protected by a rich gold-embroidered canopy, accompanied by the clergy, lined-up confraternities, and children in white tunics singing prayers and hymns.
At each altar, the priests place the monstrance, sing the Tantum Ergo, and impart the Eucharistic blessing, greeted by the sound of firecrackers and the town band. The choice to celebrate at dusk, adopted in the late 19th century to replace the ancient daytime processions, gives the festival a special magnificence, filled with lights, flowers, and deep contemplation.
For the first few evenings, the processions depart from the Mother Church; the final days see departures from the local parishes of San Giuseppe, San Giovanni Bosco, and San Francesco, ensuring that every corner of the town receives the blessing. At the end of the processions, the custom of sharing traditional peasant dishes, such as fava beans and chickpeas, is renewed in the neighborhoods, along with sweets prepared by those who set up the altars.
The tradition has been supported, both ceremonially and financially, by the Confraternity of the Sacrament since 1699. For over three centuries, it has represented the deepest identity of Valguarnera Caropepe—a ritual that weaves together popular faith, the ephemeral art of the altars, and neighborhood cohesion, attracting visitors and onlookers every year to the Erei mountains, an inland area of Sicily between Enna and the Dittaino valley.
The 74th season of celebrations following the 18th-century tradition: the 2026 edition opened on Sunday, June 7, the Sunday of Corpus Domini, and continued until approximately June 17, for eleven "sir' rù Signur".
For the first eight evenings, the processions departed from the Mother Church; the last three from the parishes of San Giuseppe, San Giovanni Bosco, and San Francesco. Along the routes, neighbors set up the autàr, while the program, presented by the parish community, combined religious and cultural moments to enhance the identity of the Erei town.
Sunday, June 7: opening on Corpus Domini Sunday with a procession from the Mother Church. Subsequent evenings (until approx. June 17): evening Eucharistic processions with different routes, the first eight evenings from the Mother Church, the last three from the parishes of San Giuseppe, San Giovanni Bosco, and San Francesco. Every evening: setting up of the autàr, deposition of the monstrance, Tantum Ergo, Eucharistic blessing accompanied by the band and firecrackers.
The festival takes place every year starting on the Sunday of Corpus Domini in June and continues for about eleven consecutive evenings. In 2026, the solemnity fell on Sunday, June 7.
