The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ in the heart of Syracuse
The Solemnity of Corpus Domini is one of the most significant events in the religious calendar of Syracuse, the capital of the province of the same name in Sicily. Celebrated on the Sunday following the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, this occasion honors the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ and culminates in the traditional Eucharistic procession through the city streetsโone of the most widely attended acts of popular devotion in the Aretusean territory.
The heart of the celebration is the Pontifical Mass presided over by the Archbishop of Syracuse, Monsignor Francesco Lomanto, at the majestic Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady of Tears, the great temple dedicated to the 1953 weeping miracle that dominates the city skyline. Following the Holy Mass, the procession with the Blessed Sacrament begins, traveling from the Sanctuary to the Parish of San Tommaso Apostolo al Pantheon, where the Archbishop delivers his address and imparts the Eucharistic blessing to the City.
The Corpus Domini procession in Syracuse is much more than a ritual: it is a moment when the entire diocesan community gathers as one. Priests, religious men and women, deacons, parish communities, groups, associations, and diocesan movements participate, carrying their banners, standards, and insignias. The crowd of faithful accompanies the Blessed Sacrament along the route in an atmosphere of silence, prayer, and reflection that also involves the many visitors present in the city.
For the people of Syracuse, Corpus Domini is an identity-defining event that bridges the spiritual and civic dimensions. In recent years, the Archbishop's homilies have addressed pressing contemporary issuesโthe rejection of all forms of violence, peace, charity, social responsibility, and the transition "from the 'I' to the 'we'"โmaking the celebration an opportunity for community reflection. The festival is part of the rich heritage of religious traditions in Syracuse, a city that boasts one of the most deeply rooted cults in Sicily through its patron saint, Saint Lucy.
The solemnity is generally celebrated in June, in the evening, with a single solemn Holy Mass followed by the procession. It is a free event open to all, offering a chance to experience an authentic moment of Sicilian religious life, away from the more crowded tourist circuits.
The 2026 edition of Corpus Domini in Syracuse took place on Sunday, June 7, 2026. At 6:30 PM, Archbishop Monsignor Francesco Lomanto presided over the day's only solemn Holy Mass at the Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady of Tears, which was packed as on few other occasions.
At the end of the celebration, the Eucharistic procession began, heading toward the Parish of San Tommaso Apostolo al Pantheon, where the Archbishop delivered his address and imparted the Eucharistic blessing to the city. The celebration and procession were broadcast live by local media.
The celebration takes place at the Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady of Tears (Via del Santuario, Syracuse), with the procession moving toward the Parish of San Tommaso Apostolo al Pantheon.
Syracuse is accessible by train (Syracuse station) and by car via the A18/RA15 Catania-Syracuse motorway. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour away. The Sanctuary is centrally located in the Borgata district.
Participation is free and open to all. The celebration and procession are also broadcast live by local media.
As this is a popular evening event, it is advisable to arrive early to secure a seat in the Sanctuary. Please dress appropriately for a place of worship.
