About Sacred Heart Festival – Borgata

Every year, during the last week of June, the historic Borgata district of Augusta (province of Syracuse) gathers around the Sacred Heart of Jesus parish for its most cherished celebration. A novena, processions of the statue through the neighborhood streets, brass band concerts, and popular community gatherings mark days when the entire district—from Borgata Santa Lucia to Piazza Sacro Cuore—rediscovers its identity. A grassroots festival that weaves together religious devotion, music, and Sicilian traditions.

The festival that defines the Borgata of Augusta

In the heart of eastern Sicily, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Festival is the event that has animated the historic Borgata district of Augusta, in the province of Syracuse, for generations. It is traditionally celebrated in the last week of June, around the liturgical solemnity of the Sacred Heart, and involves the entire neighborhood: from the Corso Croce parish to the streets of the Borgata Santa Lucia, beyond the railway line. It is much more than a religious feast: it is the moment when the Borgata community rediscovers its sense of belonging.

The days of the festival

The journey toward the festival begins with the "Festival among the homes", an initiative that brings prayer directly into the parish neighborhoods, with gatherings in Piazza Rosa Balistreri (in the former Ina Casa complex) and Via Barbarino. This is followed by the days of the novena, led by priests from various religious communities, who spiritually prepare the faithful for the solemnity.

The liturgical heart is marked by three processions: the solemn procession of the Blessed Sacrament, with the traditional blessing from small altars set up by the faithful along the streets; the procession of the Sacred Heart statue through the streets of the Borgata Santa Lucia; and finally, the grand closing procession through the parish streets, with the participation of the entire community.

Music, tradition, and festive moments

Alongside the devotional aspect, the festival offers evenings of music and entertainment in Piazza Sacro Cuore. The star of the show is the "Federico II – City of Augusta" Brass Band, conducted by Maestro Gaetano Galofaro, which dedicates a concert to the Sacred Heart with a varied repertoire designed for audiences of all ages. Over the years, the festival has hosted performances linked to Sicilian folk culture, musical exhibitions, vintage Vespa and car rallies, sports activities, and artistic illuminations that light up the district's streets.

A grassroots festival in eastern Sicily

The Sacred Heart Festival of the Borgata is organized by the Sacred Heart of Jesus parish together with the festival committee, with the support of the Municipality of Augusta. For those visiting the Syracuse area in June, it is an opportunity to experience an authentic Sicilian patronal feast up close, far from the usual tourist circuits, where faith intertwines with the conviviality of an entire neighborhood community.

In 2026, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Festival returns to animate the Borgata of Augusta. Following the "Festival among the homes" events in the parish neighborhoods, the preparatory novena begins on June 18.
