The rowing challenge between traditional Syracuse gozzi boats in the Great Harbor of Ortigia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Historical Districts Regatta of Syracuse is a traditional event that enlivens the waters of the Great Harbor and the Foro Vittorio Emanuele II promenade—the historic Marina of the city—every summer. Organized by the Il Gozzo di Marika Cultural Association, the regatta pits crews from the five historic districts against one another, representing the legacy of the ancient Greek pentapolis: Acradina, Epipoli, Neapolis, Ortigia, and Tiche.
The stars of the race are the Syracuse gozzi, traditional wooden boats also known as buzzetti, which are restored and decorated according to local custom. The competition evokes the ancient maritime tradition where fishermen would challenge each other to rowing races after finishing their daily catch. The classic route circles the island of Ortigia, starting at the mouth of the Small Harbor and finishing inside the Great Harbor, near the Darsena.
The race is the highlight of a week-long celebration. Along the Marina, the Regatta Village is set up, featuring a craft market dedicated to trades, art, and creativity, alongside stalls offering local delicacies, culinary shows, and musical performances. It is a perfect opportunity to discover Syracuse's maritime culture, local gastronomy, and the authentic atmosphere of the UNESCO World Heritage historic center.
The Historical Districts Regatta takes place in the Municipality of Syracuse, in the province of Syracuse, Sicily. This free and highly popular event combines traditional sport, civic identity, and the promotion of Ortigia, the island that holds the city's monumental heart. The event helps keep the memory of Syracuse's maritime vocation alive and strengthens the bond between the districts and their sea.
The Historical Districts Regatta of Syracuse is expected to return in the summer of 2026, confirming the August appointment with the rowing challenge between the crews of the five historic districts on traditional Syracuse gozzi boats. At the moment, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been communicated by the Il Gozzo di Marika Association. Please refer to the Municipality of Syracuse's channels for updates on the race in the Great Harbor, the route around Ortigia, and the Regatta Village with its craft market.
Syracuse is accessible by car via the A18/RA15 motorway (Syracuse exit) and by train, with the station located a short distance from the Marina and Ortigia. The nearest airport is Catania Fontanarossa, about an hour away by road.
The race is held in the waters of the Great Harbor, surrounding the island of Ortigia; the Regatta Village and the market are set up along the Foro Vittorio Emanuele II (the Marina).
Admission and participation in side events are free.
The best spots to watch the race are the Marina promenade and the docks of the Great Harbor. In August, it is recommended to book accommodation in Ortigia and the historic center well in advance.
