Flower carpets and Eucharistic procession in the land of Saint Francis
The feast of Corpus Domini is one of the most heartfelt religious observances in Assisi (province of Perugia, in Umbria). The solemnity is celebrated with solemn masses and the traditional Eucharistic procession, during which the Most Holy Sacrament passes through the city streets. What makes the day unique are the Infiorate: carpets of petals and flowers that volunteers create along the procession route, drawing sacred images, symbolic motifs, and geometries.
The Infiorate and celebrations involve several locations in the municipal area: the Porta Perlici district in the historic center of Assisi and the hamlet of Santa Maria degli Angeli, with the great Basilica of the Porziuncola. The tradition also involves the nearby communities of Petrignano and Cannara, giving rise to a widespread weekend of devotion and creativity.
The Infiorate are an example of ephemeral art: works created to last the duration of a procession, trampled by the passage of the sacred cortege. Behind each composition are hours of nocturnal work by the infioratori (flower carpet makers) groups, who select and arrange petals, leaves, and natural materials. A heritage of popular traditions that renews the community's bond with its faith each year.
The 2026 edition of Corpus Domini in Assisi is celebrated on Sunday, June 7. In Santa Maria degli Angeli, at the Basilica of the Porziuncola, masses are held throughout the day; the central Mass of the Pastoral Unity is scheduled for 5:00 PM, followed by the traditional Eucharistic procession with the flower carpets.
The infiorate and celebrations also involve the Porta Perlici district in Assisi and the communities of Petrignano and Cannara.
At the end of the 5:00 PM Mass, the procession proceeds along the streets of the hamlet: Piazza della Basilica, Piazza Garibaldi, Via B. Micarelli, Via Risorgimento, Via G. Verdi, Via Becchetti, Via Patrono d'Italia, Via De Gasperi, Piazza Martin Luther King, Via Los Angeles, and returns to the Basilica's parvis, where it concludes with the Eucharistic blessing.
Infiorate also in the Porta Perlici district in Assisi and in the communities of Petrignano and Cannara.
Santa Maria degli Angeli, where the Basilica of the Porziuncola stands, is the hamlet of Assisi closest to the train station (Assisi-Santa Maria degli Angeli) and the junctions of the SS75. The historic center of Assisi can be reached by shuttle bus or by car (paid parking at the city gates).
The Infiorate can best be admired in the morning, before the afternoon procession passes. It is advisable to inquire about the exact routes at the parishes and the tourist office.
