The night of flowers that transforms the village into an open-air museum
Every year, on the occasion of the Corpus Domini feast, the village of Spello (province of Perugia) transforms into an immense open-air museum. The Infiorate di Spello are among the oldest and most prestigious in Italy: along a route of almost two kilometers, from Porta Consolare to the belvedere, the streets of the historic center are covered with floral paintings and carpets made exclusively from petals, leaves, and plant material.
The heart of the event is the Notte dei Fiori (Night of Flowers): starting from Saturday evening, the flower-painters work non-stop until dawn to complete the artworks before Sunday morning. The compositions, ranging from a few square meters to over seventy, depict sacred subjects, biblical scenes, and decorative motifs of extraordinary complexity. It is a collective ritual involving about two thousand people, including designers, flower pickers, and flower-painters, passed down from generation to generation.
On Sunday morning, after Mass in the Church of San Lorenzo, the solemn procession of Corpus Domini passes through the still intact artworks, which are then judged by a jury for the competition awards. The main event is surrounded by floriculture and craft exhibitions, photographic exhibitions, floral cooking classes, street food, street artist performances, and activities for families. Recognized as one of the most representative popular traditions of Umbria, the Infiorate attract tens of thousands of visitors to Spello from all over Italy and abroad.
The 2026 edition, with the 63rd Infiorate Competition, enlivens Spello on the weekend of June 6 and 7. On Saturday, the creation of the artworks begins at 7:00 PM and continues throughout the Night of Flowers; on Sunday morning, once the paintings and carpets are finished, the jury begins the selections and the Corpus Domini procession takes place.
Alongside the flower carpets, a rich collateral program: floral cooking class with chef Riccardo Foglietti, "Spello in Fiore" floriculture and craft exhibition, bonsai exhibition, "Fiori, cibo e fantasia" (Flowers, food, and fantasy) non-stop street food, evening concerts, and a free kids' area with inflatables.
