About Franciscus. Fratello in Arte

The Rocca Maggiore in Assisi hosts a major exhibition by Michelangelo Pistoletto, one of the absolute masters of Italian contemporary art. 'Franciscus. Fratello in Arte' investigates the relationship between art, spirituality, and social responsibility, presenting significant works from the artist's career. The exhibition inaugurates the Assisi Estate 2026 programme, dedicated to the 8th Centenary of the death of Saint Francis.

Pistoletto Meets the Poor Man

With 'Franciscus. Fratello in Arte', the evocative Rocca Maggiore in Assisi (Province of Perugia) becomes the setting for a major exhibition dedicated to Michelangelo Pistoletto, one of the protagonists of Arte Povera and among the most influential masters of contemporary world art. The exhibition dialogues the artist's language with the places and the message of Saint Francis.

Art, Spirituality, and Social Responsibility

The exhibition explores the relationship between art, spirituality, and social responsibility, presenting significant works from Pistoletto's career. At the centre of the exhibition is the artist's declaration proclaiming Saint Francis the 'First Saint of Art', an artistic gesture that recognises in the Poor Man the one who transformed 'life into work and spirituality into shared responsibility'.

The Heart of Assisi Estate 2026
