About Palio Arnense

The Palio Arnense is the historical re-enactment of Ripa, a small hillside hamlet of Perugia, a stone's throw from the provincial capital. The event, organised by the Pro Loco of Ripa, revives the ancient festival of Sant'Antonio Abate – celebrated in the village since 1593 – blending religious and agricultural tradition with a late-Renaissance re-enactment. Between dinners in the taverns, theatricalised castle tours and atmospheres of yesteryear, the village transforms for a week into a living corner of the past.

A Palio in the Hills of Perugia

The Palio Arnense takes place in Ripa, a hamlet of Perugia located about 313 metres above sea level and about fifteen kilometres from the centre of the provincial capital. The event is organised by the Pro Loco of Ripa and is rooted in the ancient festival of Sant'Antonio Abate, documented in the village since 1593 and linked to the two parish churches of the town.

History and Re-enactment

The Palio Arnense is a late-Renaissance re-enactment that intertwines the religious and agricultural dimensions of the patron saint's festival with historical reconstruction. For the duration of the event, the village comes alive with costumes, atmospheres, and moments that recount the life of yesteryear in the Perugian countryside.

Taverns and Castle Visits

Among the week's events are evening dinners in the taverns featuring traditional dishes and theatricalised visits to the castle, with the participation of actors. An opportunity to discover a lesser-known hamlet of Perugia and its heritage of popular traditions, in an authentic setting far from the mass tourist circuits.
