Virgilio Sieni's dance performances in the cloisters and sacred spaces of Florence
Promoted by the Virgilio Sieni National Dance Production Center as part of the Estate Fiorentina, Corpo Celeste – In Chiostri is one of the most original projects in the cultural landscape of Florence. Conceived by choreographer and director Virgilio Sieni, it transforms the city's cloisters, refectories, former monasteries, and historic courtyards into spaces for listening, meditation, and performance, breathing new life into these precious sites through dance.
At the heart of Corpo Celeste is the human body, explored in its fragility and expressive power. Here, dance becomes a tool to build relationships of care—between the individual and the community, and between the person and the city. Each day is structured as a journey that weaves together practical gesture workshops open to people of all ages and abilities, short poetic practices, talks with artists, intellectuals, and scholars, and finally, site-specific performances accompanied by live music. The project engages with Florence through its spaces and tensions, turning sacred sites—cloisters and refectories—into stages where one can rediscover silence, listening, and the birth of new communities.
The festival selects some of the most evocative and secluded spaces in Florence, usually far from the main tourist flows. Venues involved in recent editions include:
Part of the rich Estate Fiorentina program, which animates Florence and its province every year with over a thousand events, Corpo Celeste represents the most reflective and contemplative side of the Tuscan capital's summer schedule. Its formula, which combines high-level choreographic research, philosophical thought, and accessibility, has made it a highly anticipated event for contemporary dance enthusiasts, curious visitors, and citizens wishing to rediscover the hidden heritage of their city. Admission is free, and the emotionally impactful performances generally take place in the evening, when the cloisters are lit with an intimate and collected atmosphere.
The 2026 edition of Corpo Celeste – In Chiostri is the third installment of the project signed by the Virgilio Sieni National Dance Production Center. From July 13 to 24, 2026, the cloisters, refectories, and sacred spaces of Florence transform into places of meditation and performance, where dance and reflection on the body become tools to build virtuous relationships of care.
The event is part of the Estate Fiorentina 2026 program, promoted by the Municipality of Florence, which this year features over 1,200 events spread throughout the city.
The third edition of Corpo Celeste – In Chiostri weaves together dance performances and contributions from artists, intellectuals, and scholars. Among the names announced for the 2026 edition are:
As in previous editions, each day alternates practical gesture workshops open to all, short poetic practices, talks with scholars, and site-specific performances with live music, set in the city's cloisters and refectories.
The detailed day-by-day program, including times and locations for each appointment, will be published by the organization in the weeks leading up to the event on the official website virgiliosieni.it.
The festival venues are located in the historic center of Florence and its immediate surroundings. Florence is easily accessible by train via the Santa Maria Novella station, which is well-connected to the rest of Italy, and by plane via the Florence-Peretola airport. The venues can be reached on foot or via the city's public transport network.
Admission to the events is usually free, though reservations are recommended given the limited capacity of the spaces. Bookings can be made online (often via Eventbrite) or by contacting the ticket office of the Virgilio Sieni National Dance Production Center.
