About Contursi 1350

Every November, the old town of Contursi Terme steps back into the Middle Ages with «Contursi 1350. The Siege and the Pride», a historical re-enactment that brings to life the siege the village endured in 1350 during the march of King Louis of Hungary's army toward Naples. Through the narrow alleys of the historic center, visitors can enjoy fire shows, armed duels, medieval taverns serving period dishes, and stalls featuring artisans and merchants: an open-air evening journey in the heart of the Salerno province, in Campania.

A night in the Middle Ages in the village of Contursi Terme

As autumn turns crisp and thermal tourism slows down, the old town of Contursi Terme lights up its torches and braziers for «Contursi 1350. The Siege and the Pride», a historical re-enactment that transports the village's oldest core back to the 14th century. The event takes place in the hilltop village overlooking the Sele Valley, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of inland Campania: a maze of alleys, arches, stairways, and squares that tells the story of the town by day and becomes the natural stage for a medieval siege by night.

The re-enacted history: the spring of 1350

The narrative thread of the event is a specific episode from the history of the Angevin Mezzogiorno. In the spring of 1350, the army of Louis of Anjou, King of Hungary, marched from Puglia toward Naples, determined to conquer the Kingdom. While the feudal lords in Conza bowed their heads and swore allegiance to the sovereign, Contursi refused to surrender: the King then laid siege to the castle. From this stubborn choice comes the subtitle of the re-enactment, the siege and the pride, which focuses not so much on the military outcome as on the identity of a community that chose not to yield. The audience follows the unfolding of events along the route, amidst acted scenes, processions, and spectacular moments.

What to expect along the path

The re-enactment is designed as an evening walk through the village, with successive stops alternating between entertainment, craftsmanship, and gastronomy. The recurring elements of the event include:

  • Fire shows in the squares and small plazas of the old town, featuring jugglers and fire-eaters;
  • Duels and armed combat with performers in period clothing and armor;
  • Medieval taverns set up along the route, where you can sample dishes inspired by the cuisine of the time;
  • Artisan and merchant stalls, with demonstrations of ancient crafts and small-scale trade in costume;
  • Alleys, courtyards, and stairways illuminated by torches, giving the village a nocturnal atmosphere from another era.

The taverns and period flavors

As in many re-enactments in the Campanian Apennines, the gastronomic aspect is not just a side note but a key part of the story. The taverns set up in the village offer period dishes served by costumed performers, in spaces carved out of the old town's architecture. It is the most direct way to step into the scene: you eat seated within the village walls, often by candlelight, while the story of the siege continues just a short distance away.

The old town as a backdrop

The true protagonist of the event is the historic center of Contursi Terme, a medieval cluster of stone houses built on high ground, recognized as a local heritage site by its inhabitants. Its compact structure, with narrow alleys and constant changes in elevation, allows for a route where every corner can host a scene without the need for large structures. It is also an opportunity for many visitors to discover a part of the town that the tourist flow linked to the thermal baths often overlooks.

Contursi Terme, between the Sele and the springs

Contursi Terme is best known for its thermal waters, utilized in the facilities of the Bagni area along the Sele River, at the foot of the village. The municipality has just over three thousand inhabitants and serves as a junction between the Sele plain, the upper valley, and the inland areas of the province of Salerno. The November re-enactment represents one of the moments when the town shares its story outside the thermal season, focusing on its medieval history and its relationship with the territory.

When it takes place

The event is held in November, traditionally over a weekend, starting in the late afternoon: in the 2025 edition, the village opened its doors to the public starting at 6:30 PM on Saturday, November 15th, and Sunday, November 16th. As it is an evening, outdoor event in a hilly old town, appropriate seasonal clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended.

By train: Contursi Terme station on the Battipaglia-Potenza line, connected to the center by short road transfers. By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport, or Naples-Capodichino.

Parking and access

The re-enactment route takes place entirely within the old town, which is closed to traffic during the event: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas of the lower town and walk up. The route includes steep alleys and stairways, which are not well-suited for strollers or those with mobility issues.

Tips
