Contemporary choreographic research at the Teatro Metastasio in Prato
Contemporanea Festival / Focus Danza is one of the most significant events in the Tuscan choreographic research scene. Born as a project of the Fondazione Teatro Metastasio di Prato, the festival has been active since 1999, bringing the best of contemporary creation to the capital of the Province of Prato over the years, transforming the city into a crossroads of stage, body, and visual languages.
In its most recent iteration, the festival has adopted the subtitle Focus Danza, concentrating its attention on dance and choreographic research. Artistic director Edoardo Donatini offers a program that weaves together performances, works-in-progress, and studies by Italian and international artists, with a special focus on emerging voices from the European scene.
The festival is spread across iconic landmarks of Prato's cultural life: the Teatro Metastasio, the Teatro Fabbricone, SpazioK, and the Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art. The Pecci Center also hosts the Institute of Advanced Choreographic Studies, a project promoted by KLm dedicated to sharing choreographic practices and knowledge through meetings, workshops, screenings, and study sessions with associated artists.
Each edition features a theme that guides the programming. The festival questions the role of the body in contemporary society, viewing it as a living archive and a space of critical presence in an era marked by the dematerialization of experience. Dance thus becomes a vector for knowledge, thought, and resistance.
Realized with the support of the Tuscany Region, the Municipality of Prato, and the Province of Prato, Contemporanea Festival / Focus Danza is a reference point for dance and performing arts enthusiasts eager to discover new horizons in choreographic creation in the heart of Tuscany.
The Contemporanea-26 / Focus Danza edition offered five days entirely dedicated to dance and choreographic research, from June 9 to 13, 2026. The program brought together Italian and international artists and companies in Prato's main theatrical venues.
Highlights included Abracadabra by CollettivO CineticO, the danced concert Nico, Desertshore, and works by Sara Sguotti, Michele Ifigenia Colturi, Federica D'Aversa, and Simon Le Borgne. The French company La Pieuvre, directed by Rebecca Journo, presented L'Heure du thรฉ. The Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art hosted the Institute of Advanced Choreographic Studies with meetings, workshops, and screenings.
Prato is easily accessible by train (Prato Centrale and Prato Porta al Serraglio stations) and by car via the A1 and A11 motorways. The Teatro Metastasio is located at Via Benedetto Cairoli 59, in the heart of the historic center.
