A day of celebration through the alleys of the medieval village of Colognora, in the Lucca Valleriana
When the mild season returns to the hills of Valleriana, the small village of Colognora di Valleriana awakens for its Spring Festival. For an entire day, from early morning until evening, the narrow alleys and small squares of the medieval fortress fill with stalls, scents, and music. It is a community festival in the most authentic sense: an event that brings together residents, former inhabitants, and visitors in one of the most characteristic villages of the Villa Basilica municipality, in the Province of Lucca, in the heart of Tuscany.
Colognora di Valleriana is an ancient walled village resting on a rocky spur at an altitude of about 500 meters, in the area known as Svizzera Pesciatina, a region of castles and chestnut groves stretching between Lucca and Pistoia. Its stone houses, arranged in a ring, follow the layout of the ancient fortifications, while the Church of San Michele, with its unique bell gable, dominates the town. Colognora is also famous for its distinct dialect, considered a true linguistic island: a rarity that adds to its charm. Walking through its alleys during the festival means breathing in the atmosphere of a suspended time.
The day's program showcases the soul of the territory. Along the village streets, craft stalls are set up, featuring handmade products and local creations. In the afternoon comes the most anticipated and spectacular moment: the parade of the Musici e Sbandieratori del rione Santa Maria, which, with drums, clarions, and fluttering flags, brings the color and energy of Tuscan historical re-enactments to the stones of the fortress.
The festival is also an opportunity to taste the village's traditional cuisine. The food stands offer tortelli colognori, the community's signature dish, along with sandwiches, necci (typical chestnut flour waffles), and drinks. It is the simple, genuine gastronomy of the Lucca mountains, tied to the chestnut groves that have accompanied the life of these towns for centuries.
Admission is free, and the event is aimed at everyone: families, hikers, and curious visitors who want to discover an authentic corner of Tuscany far from the main tourist flows. The Colognora di Valleriana Spring Festival is the ideal day to combine a walk through the villages of Valleriana with the pleasure of a genuine village fair, carefully organized by the local community and the Municipality of Villa Basilica.
