Every summer, during the first week of August, the medieval village of Castiglione in Teverina transforms into the oenological capital of the Tuscia region. The Colli del Tevere Wine Festival is the most anticipated event on the calendar for this small town in the province of Viterbo, in northern Lazio, nestled between the Tiber River and Lake Bolsena along the Teverina Wine Route. With over forty editions behind it, the event is affectionately dubbed the 'Woodstock of Wine' due to the festive, popular atmosphere that fills its alleys and squares.
For five days, the historic centre is filled with taverns set up by local associations, where you can enjoy traditional Lazio peasant dishes paired with wines from local producers. The village cellars open their doors, and in Piazza del Poggetto, FISAR sommeliers guide tastings, showcasing labels from local winemakers. The Colli del Tevere wine, produced from vineyards sloping down toward the river, is the true star of the festival.
The nerve centre of the event is the MUVIS - Wine and Agri-food Science Museum, housed in the majestic Vaselli cellars. Inside the museum, structured tastings led by a sommelier take place, allowing visitors to discover the centuries-old bond between the land and wine production. It is one of the most important wine museums in central Italy and tells the agri-food history of the Colli del Tevere.
The village, decorated with barrels and vine shoots, comes alive every evening with musical performances, folk groups, dancing, and street artists. In recent years, projections and laser light shows have provided a backdrop to the historic centre, combining the tradition of a local festival with a spectacular touch. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is that of a convivial village feast, where entire families and visitors from all over Italy gather until late at night.
The Wine Festival is organised by the Pro Loco of Castiglione in Teverina together with local associations and wineries, with the support of the Municipality and the Province of Viterbo. More than just a food and wine festival, it represents a defining moment for an entire community that celebrates its winemaking vocation and welcomes thousands of visitors to the heart of the Viterbo Tuscia.
The 2026 edition of the Colli del Tevere Wine Festival has not yet been officially announced by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Castiglione in Teverina. Based on previous years, the festival is expected to take place during the first week of August and span five days. Definitive dates will be published on the event's official channels.
The detailed programme for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. Traditionally, the event spans five days featuring taverns in the historic centre, sommelier-led tastings by FISAR, openings of the MUVIS - Wine and Agri-food Science Museum, musical performances, and street artists. Castiglione in Teverina can be reached by car via the A1 motorway (Orvieto exit), just a few kilometres from the border with Umbria; from Viterbo, take the road towards Bagnoregio and Civitella d'Agliano. The nearest train station is Orvieto, on the Rome-Florence line.

Summer evenings attract many visitors: it is advisable to arrive early to park near the centre and book your guided museum tastings in advance.
